dirty oil and gauge bouncing

Asked by Mitchell Oct 22, 2021 at 02:41 PM about the 1990 Ford F-250

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Took pickup in for a tune up, anyway when I got the pickup back when I shut
off the truck gas would start running out of my front fuel tank fill tube.
Evidently my rear fuel pump was still pumping with engine off. Mechanic was
a friend of a friend and I didn't want to make waves so I quit using rear fuel
tank and thought little of the issue.  Within a couple weeks of driving 20 miles
a day my pickup's oil pressure gauge began bouncing after running for about
5 minutes. I changed the oil and took pickup back to mechanic ... he said it
was likely the oil pump causing gauge to bounce. he changed the oil pump
no improvement. I asked about the fuel pump and he said that wouldn't do it.
Bought the pickup for $900 in 2016 drove it daily for almost 3 years it has
been pretty much parked for the last couple. Fresh oil looks thin and nasty in
very short order... is this a write off
or can I get it figured out some how? Between tires and mechanic bill I have
extra $2000 into it and it still doesn't really owe me anything just hate to give
up like the mechanic did if it's something simple. He said compression was
good and oil pressure gauge working correctly just doesn't know why oil is
deteriorating so quickly and gauge is bouncing.

I think an oil pressure should be hooked up to see what the pressure is before changing a pump .. Don't count on any ones word , see for yourself if the compression is good or try another mechanic . I've dealt with so much bad information and blow hard morons it ain't even funny . ESPECIALLY in auto repair ..

Does the oil smell like gasoline? Is the engine running poorly with black smoke coming from the exhaust? Is the catalytic converter glowing red or orange? If so you have way too much gasoline flowing to the engine! Find out why the fuel pump keeps running. Sounds like a bad fuel pump relay or a wiring problem. Remove the vacuum hoses from the charcoal canister. Is there liquid gasoline in the hoses and the canister? Not good! Check the hoses at the fuel pump for proper hook up. Check the purge valve for the EVAP system, it may be stuck open. Check any wiring that may have been moved, damaged, or tampered with during the tune up. Simply moving a wiring harness to access something on a 32 year old vehicle can cause the insulation on the wires to crack, break, and fall off creating a short circuit. Hope that helps! Jim
