Help! Low oil pressure.

Asked by LemonsEverywhere Nov 16, 2016 at 03:58 PM about the 1997 Dodge RAM 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

97 Dodge ram 1500 Laramie alt 5.9l magnum.

I have the same problem. Changed the pump,
cleaned the pan, changed the sending unit.
Nothing. I also hear what sounds like a lifter tap at
and over 2000 rpms. It only does all of this when
warm. Obviously the oil was changed when the
pump was replaced. The oil pressure does drop
almost to the minimum line, but never below it.
Also noticed the oil looks watered down now and
may have a fuel smell to it. The coolant level is fine
and looks brand new. Any ideas?

Gas in the fuel is probably from a leaking fuel injector. If so fix it before you ruin your engine. How many miles on the engine?

Worn bearings can cause low oil pressure but in your case the fuel in the oil is the prime suspect.

I knew worn bearings could be a possibility. I'm just really hoping it's not that. After the pump and oil change it was fine for about 2 days. Pressure dropped alittle, but no tick or oil light.

The fresh oil restoring the oil pressure is a clue. It would take a while to contaminate the oil with fuel to the point that the pressure dropped again. Check your spark plugs to see if any are sooty black.
