Could knocking in engine be a major problem?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We have an 2006 acura tl that we have had two transmissions replaced in. The
car has started making a loud knocking noise which we thought was from the
crank shaft pully but that was not the case. The noise has gotten louder over
the past few months. Any reccomendations on possibly pointing out the
problem?

If it runs well it could be piston slap. The piston wobbling inside the combustion chamber from worn rings, bearing or wrist-pin, that can happen and not affect performance.... for a while....until something breaks. If you have a noticeable lack of power it could be a rod thrown and it will not go much farther. Surprising, that Acura is a high-end car and a 2006 is rare for that to happen unless oil changes have been neglected

your best bet would be remove the serpintine belt, this rules out anything that is drivin by the belt, If you start the engine and it knocks, and if you rev the engine slightly and the knock gets faster chances are you have a rod knock. This is not good and usualy ends up in a engine change.

Thank you for your input and I only pray and hope it is nothing major. Sad to say that this would be a great car if we hadn't had so many problems with it.

Did the noise coincide with the transmission change? If so maybe the flywheel or the torque converter have loose bolts.
