No, engine can stay in but it's not without difficulty. Check for how-tos on http://vintagethunderbirdclub.net and http://www.tbird.org/, a lot of people are wanting to swap pans or pan gaskets without pulling motor. Of course if you have a cherry picker or hoist, lifting the engine even a couple inches can make it much easier without having to pull a bunch of stuff other than mounts.
