Timing chain came off 02

Can  i just replace chain ?

Garage at first did not know what was wrong. Then took cover off said its slack. And said maybe best get a second hand engine.

He said was easier to replace it .As a new chain might not fix the problem , He does not know if any valve damaged, The chain just went loose No power and only has compression off 160.. We have only owned this car since January has 119000 i think . On service stamp said belt been changed .Only its not a belt and a chain on it..
