I have a 1983 camaro z28. i have a r700 transmission and when i start driving the car winds out the first gear high and then shifts fine through the rest of the gears. is that a problem?

Do you know if there was a shift kit installed in your transmission? If so thats probably where your getting the hard shift into second but if not then your bands in first gear may be worn if the trans hasnt been rebuilt yet.

in the 700r4 i believe first gear is shared with overdrive. they are notorious for having problems with that shared gear. your tranny might be going out. cant say for sure though without examining it in person
