Is the splash guard necessary?

Asked by EricBell Jun 01, 2014 at 02:55 PM about the 2003 Toyota 4Runner

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I'm referring to the thin piece of metal behind the tire, behind the caliper and wheel
bearing assembly.  Ours makes a rattle sound and the noise is gone when this guard is
removed.  Is it necessary?
I replaced the wheel bearing assembly on our Toyota 4runner and while struggling to
remove this from the vehicle, the splash guard may have taken a beating.  When
driving over a rough surface, an annoying rattle sound developed.  That sound is gone
now with the slash guard removed. I'm just curious if this piece of metal is absolutely
necessary and what is the purpose of this?

It keeps dirt from getting around your brakes and bearings. I would not run without mine.
