Price of a new or reasonable 1996 subraru wagon engine

Asked by parpar Feb 04, 2012 at 03:15 PM about the 1996 Subaru Legacy

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

I want to know a reasonable cost to replace the engine on my 1996
Subaru Brighton stationwagon. The rest of the car is in good shape but I must
add
water because of over heating every 10 miles. I was told I need a new engine.
What
is a good price for an engine. My mechanic is a saint so I know I wouldn't be
overcharged.

You have 58 views, they don't know and neither do I. Because getting an engine for your car that's in good shape may not be easy, the best way is to determine how much you like the car. Then determine what it will cost you to replace it. That should give you a good idea of the maximum price you'd be willing to pay for the engine. Then find the best 3 if you can and negotiate.

an overheating engine doesn't sound like you need a new engine, as a mechanic myself I would be looking more at head gaskets (easy way to tell oil in your coolant or coolant in your oil), a leak in the radiator or possibly bent radiator fins, a leak in the coolant system, or a thermostat issue. If your mechanic didn't check all these things and inform you that he did but instead first thing says, oh you need a new motor, he's not such a saint, unless the overheating ruined the motor it shouldn't need replaced just because it overheats.

subaru engines run between $2200 and $3000 depending on installation costs, just to answer your question.
