sounds like you have a blown head gasket check for water in the oil this is a good sign for a blown head gasket. The white smoke out of exhaust is a sign you have water in your oil

After the fuel pump was put in the mechanic said car started and ran then when I came too pick it up it would not start would it still be a gasket?

Sounds like a horribly neglected car that should probably be scrapped at this point.

Sometimes it is best to cut your losses and try again, or you could get a Jasper engine.
