1994 GMC C1500 trouble with idling, running rough

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My truck is having issues with running
smoothly.  There is a clacking noise at
certain rpms, it idles rough, and the check
engine light comes on infrequently.  I was
wondering if replacing the plugs wires and
distributor cap would help.  I am on a limited
budget but worried and  need to fix this.  My
title says GMC 1500, if what I list is not that,
I am having trouble finding it on the drop
down list

Do a compression test , could be vacuum leaks at intake . What do the plugs , wires and distributor look like ?

Could probably used replaced. That's the next thing, first I'm going to buy some carburetor cleaner.

Scan the computer for trouble codes. Since the check engine light is coming on there is at least one code stored in the computer. Since this is an OBD I vehicle your local auto parts store might not be able to scan the computer for you. If that's the case you'll need to either flash out the stored codes by using a paper clip or by using a scan tool that's capable of reading OBD I systems. Once you have the stored codes you can go from there. Hope that helps! Jim
