My husband accidentally drained transmission
fluid instead of oil. Is there any way to add some
ourselves?

Can any car dealer do it, not just Subaru dealer? Our closest Subaru dealer is 2 hours away.

Use the Subaru brand CVT fluid. There are Youtube videos but if you don't feel comfortable with this I HIGHLY recommend protecting your EXPENSIVE CVT by taking it to the Subaru dealer. A $8,000 transmission is not something you want to chance ruining by taking it to a local yokel.
