Would the tire pressure light come on for over inflated tires? as well as under
inflated?

If you already aired up your tires, then the pressure sensor is faulty. They are located in the wheel as part of the valve stem and use batteries, these only last 5 to 7 years, or the life of the tire. Stop in a tire shop and have it resolved.
