Key will not turn car off

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Tried to shut down the car, but the ingition key turned freely with no resistance. Had to disconnect battery to turn the car off. Car will not start, and steering wheel will not lock.

can that be changed without going all into the steering column?

sometime there is a rod that goes from the key/lock cylinder to the actual lock ? Myself I would remove all the metal / plastic trim and take a look . Also go to you tube and see if you can find any good info. good luck
