When you notice the rpm on the dash goes up without the vehicle moving. Start revving the engine up to go and you don't move. If there is a dip stick to check the fluid level, you should check it. Also smell the fluid on the stick to see if it has a burnt smell to it. If the vehicle moves ok, but the transmission does not shift properly, may just need a fluid and filter replacement, or a shift solenoid may just be bad. Never the less, proper diagnosis should be done by a transmission shop.
