Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car was diagnosed with misfire on cylinder 3. Would I need to change the
ignition coil and the spark plug or can I just do the spark plug? I will change all
the spark plugs.

You can try just the plug and see if that does it.

okay. I will. I do need to know if it is okay to drive with it misfiring. I babied it for 3 miles home.

A miss fire will eventually damage the catalytic converter. You should try and get this fixed as soon as you can. Here are some other causes for a cylinder miss fire....Possible causes; Faulty spark plug 3, Clogged or faulty fuel injector 3, Faulty ignition coil 3, Fuel injector 3 harness is open or shorted, Fuel injector 3 circuit poor electrical connection, Ignition coil 3 harness is open or shorted, Ignition coil 3 circuit poor electrical connection, Insufficient cylinder 3 compression, Incorrect fuel pressure, Intake air leak.

Swap the spark plug and coil with another cylinder to see if the miss moves. If the miss is still there and doesn't move, inspect the #3 fuel injector and wiring.

Little info. on Misfire 2008 Hyundai Accent. If I would step down on the gas somewhat hard to enter a freeway on ramp, Sometimes the car would stumble and go into close loop mode and give me the check engine light then I would have to shut the car off and restart and the car and it would run normal. Later I would pull codes up and see a misfire Cly #3 or #4. After replacing both coils no help the car continues getting misfire codes replaced plugs no help ck fuel sys ok. LONG STORY SO TOO THE FIX- ( THE TIMING BELT WAS STRETCHED ). One more little bit of info. If you replacing the Timing Belt replace the Water Pump at the same time. Reason is to replace the water pump you have to remove the timing belt, Only 4 bolts and you are right their only makes sense. NOW THE MISFIRES MAKE SENSE... HAVE A BLESSED DAY.

I just pushed in the plug slightly on cylinder 2 and it totally fixed my misfire and idle/ acceleration issues.
