May be a bad VSS. Vehicle speed sensor. Do you have a check engine light on?

If you're noticing slipping of the tranny or delayed shifting, you may also have a bad shift solenoid.

You might check the owner's manual and see what the natural state of that light is. For instance, on my Dodge Dakota, the OD light is off when is overdrive.

The Expedition has a button in the know of the shift lever. Pushing it in either turns it on or off. See if you have that button. Maybe it got pressed by accident.
