will any 3.0l engine work in a 2005 ranger w/o changing the control module?

NO. Be aware there is a Duratec 3.0V6 and a Vulcan 3.0V6 make sure you match to the correct design. Your Ranger Vulcan engine has been revised over the years. I suggest locate the identical engine.check the label and build date code to ID it.
