Reviews SummaryIt’s getting hard to find a basic subcompact sedan, but Nissan is keeping the faith. The Nissan Versa returned to the Canadian line-up in the 2021 model year after a six-year hiatus, slotting below the Sentra in the lineup. The most recent redesign was just a year earlier, for the 2020 model year. For 2023, the Versa gets a handful of updates, including freshened styling and more available tech features. In addition to the Versa S, the lineup includes SV and SR models; we tested the latter for this review. Since the Versa has been on sale, the ranks of subcompact cars have thinned considerably. The Chevrolet Sonic, the Ford Fiesta, the Honda Fit, the Hyundai Accent, and the Toyota Yaris are no longer sold in North America. That leaves the Kia Rio and the Mitsubishi Mirage hatchback as the Versa’s main competitors, and the Rio is on its way out of Canada for 2024 as well. But, as is always the case in this market segment, shoppers must also consider whether to buy a new car like the Versa or a potentially better-equipped used car for similar money.
Reviews SummaryThe Toyota Corolla compact car accomplished a once-unthinkable feat in 2022 by unseating the Honda Civic as the best-selling car in Canada. Over the decades, the Corolla has stayed true to its original formula of delivering a reliable and economical vehicle for the masses. With the introduction of the Corolla Hybrid in 2020, that formula is even more relevant. Note the Corolla Hybrid is offered as a sedan only; the Corolla Hatchback is only available with a gas powertrain.

The 2023 Toyota Corolla Hybrid received significant updates, including a new all-wheel-drive option for most trims and a power increase for its hybrid system. The exterior design was subtly refreshed with new grille patterns and rear bumpers, enhancing its appeal. The front end featured sculpted wraparound headlights and a sporty trapezoidal grille, while the side and tail remained more conventional. Inside, the Corolla Hybrid maintained a minimalistic design, with an abundance of hard plastics and limited padding on armrests, emphasizing its focus on efficiency. The XSE trim added SofTex synthetic leather, but the overall interior quality fell short compared to competitors like the Honda Civic and Mazda 3.
The 2023 Nissan Versa borrowed design elements from larger Nissan sedans, giving it an upscale appearance. The V-Motion grille and sleek profile contributed to its modern look. The Versa received styling updates, including a more elaborate grille and new wheel designs. Inside, the Versa showcased creativity with large air vents and an elaborate dashboard. While most materials were plastic, the fit and finish were commendable. The SR trim added red stitching and upholstery inserts, enhancing its appeal. The Versa offered a comfortable ride, with a suspension that absorbed bumps well and lower-than-expected cabin noise levels.

The 2023 Toyota Corolla Hybrid featured a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine with hybrid drive, producing 134 horsepower and 156 pound-feet of torque. This was an increase of 13 hp and 10 lb-ft over the previous model. The powertrain included a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and front-wheel drive, with an additional 40-hp electric motor providing on-demand all-wheel drive. The hybrid powertrain responded quickly from a standstill, but power built slowly, taking around nine seconds to reach 100 km/h. The dedicated EV drive mode was challenging to maintain on open roads. Braking was consistent, and handling was adequate, though not particularly engaging. Road noise was present, and larger bumps impacted cabin comfort.
The 2023 Nissan Versa was equipped with a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 122 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque. The CVT was standard, and the five-speed manual transmission was discontinued. The Versa's performance was satisfactory, with responsive handling and remarkable grip despite noticeable body roll in corners. The steering was fairly responsive, enhancing the driving experience. The Versa provided a comfortable ride, with the suspension effectively cushioning impacts and maintaining low cabin noise levels. Overall, the Versa felt more substantial than typical subcompact cars, offering a refined driving experience.
The 2023 Toyota Corolla Hybrid offered ample front space, though the steering wheel's limited telescoping range could be an issue for taller drivers. The large windows provided excellent visibility, and the cloth upholstery was comfortable in warm weather. Interior storage was adequate, with a small tray, cupholders, and a medium-sized centre armrest bin. Rear seats accommodated average adults, but headroom was limited. The trunk capacity was 371 litres, with rear seats folding for additional space, though not flat with the floor.
The 2023 Nissan Versa, available only as a sedan, offered 416 litres of trunk space in the base S trim and 425 litres in SV and SR trims. The front row felt spacious, with good visibility aided by a low dashboard. Rear-seat space was less generous, but passengers didn't complain. Storage was limited, with a small centre console bin. The shifter's raised platform looked stylish but wasn't the best use of space. The optional wireless charging pad was conveniently tucked away.
The 2023 Toyota Corolla Hybrid came with an 8-inch multimedia touchscreen, featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The system was quick to respond, with improved voice commands activated by saying, "Hey Toyota." Over-the-air software updates kept the system current, and it could pair two Bluetooth devices simultaneously. However, the JBL audio system available in the U.S. was not offered in Canada.
The 2023 Nissan Versa's base S trim included a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, and Siri Eyes Free voice control. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were available on SV and SR trims, along with NissanConnect Services telematics. The SR trim added an 8-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, and a six-speaker audio system. The touchscreens were small by current standards, and the graphics appeared outdated. The digital instrument cluster display added a touch of sophistication, providing vital information alongside an analog speedometer.
The 2023 Toyota Corolla Hybrid received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, with four stars for rollover protection. The IIHS awarded the standard 2022 Corolla sedan its top score of "good" and named it a Top Safety Pick+. The Corolla Hybrid came standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, including features like frontal collision warning, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and a blind-spot monitor.
The 2023 Nissan Versa excelled in standard driver-assist technology, with features like automatic emergency braking, rear automatic braking, and lane-departure warning on the base S trim. The SV trim added blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The NHTSA awarded the Versa a five-star overall safety rating, with five stars in side-impact crash testing and four stars in frontal and rollover categories.
