Reviews SummaryEven in a grim year, Honda is selling a staggering number of CR-Vs. The CR-V is the best-selling Honda in Canada, edging out the home-built Honda Civic. The CR-V is also the second best-selling compact SUV, just behind the Toyota RAV4. And it was the sixth best-selling vehicle in Canada in 2021. So, it’s hard to argue against the CR-V formula. Honda’s been at this almost as long as crossovers have been a thing, launching the CR-V in 1997—a year after the RAV4 debuted. The funny thing is, aside from sales volume, there’s only one thing the CR-V particularly excels at. Aesthetics are subjective, but it would be hard to argue the CR-V is the best-looking vehicle in its class. It’s not the cheapest. It’s not the best equipped, especially at the middle to lower trim levels. It’s not the fastest, nor is it the quietest, or the most fuel efficient. It’s not even the most reliable, showing up nowhere in J.D. Power's Most Reliable list. So, what makes it so appealing to Canadian consumers? Let’s see if we can figure that out.
Reviews SummaryFrom its styling and interior to its powertrain and technology, the 2020 Audi Q7 gets a thorough update that brings it in line with other high-end cars and SUVs wearing four chrome rings on their grilles. Simultaneously, the changes for the 2020 model year keep this Audi competitive against the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, its primary rivals in the midsize luxury SUV class. We packed a Q7 Technik full of family and luggage and set off to assess this Audi’s improvements on the open road.

The 2020 Audi Q7 offered a range of variations, with the 55 TFSI model featuring a mild-hybrid turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine. This model started at $75,000 Canadian, with the Technik trim bringing the total to $86,100. The Q7's design updates included changes to the front and rear styling, new wheels, and lighting elements, aligning it with the flagship Q8 model. Inside, the Q7 adopted the high-tech dashboard and instrumentation from the Q8, featuring three digital displays and Audi’s Virtual Cockpit panel. The cabin, adorned in Okapi Brown leather and Gray/Brown Fine Grain Ash wood inlays, exuded an upscale and high-tech vibe, enhanced by multi-colour ambient lighting.
In contrast, the 2021 Honda CR-V's design was similar to other compact crossovers, with few distinguishing features. It offered seven colours, though many were shades of grey, black, or white. The interior was available in black, with options for cloth or leather depending on the trim. The CR-V's seats had a modern look with angular details. While not a standout in design, the CR-V focused on practicality and comfort, with vehicles like the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson offering more distinctive styling.

The 2020 Audi Q7 55 TFSI featured a new 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 engine, producing 335 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. It included a 48-volt mild-hybrid system to conserve fuel, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and Quattro AWD. Audi Drive Select offered various driving modes, and the SUV accelerated from zero to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. It had a maximum tow rating of nearly 3,500 kilograms and averaged 11.2 L/100 km during testing. The Technik trim included an adaptive air suspension, enhancing its off-road capability. The Q7 provided a quiet cabin and responsive acceleration, especially in Dynamic mode.
The 2021 Honda CR-V, with its 1.5-litre turbo four-cylinder engine, delivered 190 horsepower. It accelerated to 100 km/h in about 8 seconds, comparable to its competitors. All trims featured a CVT, with AWD available as an option. The CR-V's handling and ride quality were decent, with a MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension. While not as engaging as some rivals, the CR-V offered predictable performance suitable for everyday driving.
The Audi Q7, with its three rows, was best used as a five-passenger vehicle. The third row was cramped, suitable only for children, and reduced cargo space to 402 litres. Folding it expanded capacity to 1,010 litres, and with both rows down, it offered 1,970 litres. The Technik trim provided comfortable seating and climate control, but interior storage was limited.
The Honda CR-V excelled in practicality, fitting five people comfortably with ample cargo space. It offered over 1,065 litres of cargo volume with the rear seats folded. Depending on the trim, the CR-V featured manual, power, or hands-free tailgate options. Roof rails were standard on most trims, enhancing its utility.
The 2020 Audi Q7 introduced MMI Touch Response technology with dual touchscreens, natural voice recognition, and wireless Apple CarPlay. The system was generally intuitive, though dry fingertips sometimes caused issues. The Technik trim included a head-up display and a Bose sound system, later replaced by Bang & Olufsen components in 2021.
The 2021 Honda CR-V came with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, supporting Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Higher trims offered enhanced audio systems and navigation. Charging ports were abundant, with the Touring trim adding a wireless phone charger.
The Audi Q7 featured advanced driving-assistance systems, though some, like Adaptive Cruise Assist, were problematic. The IIHS rated its collision protection highly, but the headlights received a "poor" rating due to glare.
The Honda CR-V excelled in safety, earning top ratings from NHTSA and IIHS. Honda Sensing, standard across all trims, included features like forward collision warning and lane keeping assist. Only the base trim lacked blind spot monitoring.
