2023 Kia Carnival Reviews Summary

Over the holidays of 2022, we used the 2023 Kia Carnival to drive to many gatherings of family and friends. Whenever we slid open a side door to load or unload passengers, a common question was: “So, is this a minivan or an SUV?” If you work in Kia’s marketing department, the Carnival is neither. The company calls it a multi-purpose vehicle, or MPV. But if you’re a typical consumer, this stylish Kia is a minivan because it has sliding doors and does not offer all-wheel drive or a lifted suspension.

2023 Volvo XC90 Reviews Summary

In sophisticated circles, the Volvo XC90 can feel like an old friend. Its design has evolved subtly over the past twenty years, making it recognizable without looking old. For 2023, the XC90’s powertrains have evolved, too. Out with the T5 and T6 engines, in with the B5 and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains. Finally, Google lovers will absolutely want to investigate the new XC90’s forward-thinking infotainment technology.

Look and feel

2023 Kia Carnival

8/10

2023 Volvo XC90

10/10

The 2023 Kia Carnival presented a unique blend of style and functionality, setting itself apart from typical minivans. It featured a distinctive design with high-tech lighting, an intricate grille, and decorative roof pillar trim. The SX trim, with its Storm Blue paint, added an upscale image, although the black alloy wheels were less imaginative. Inside, the Carnival boasted dual instrumentation and infotainment screens, dual power sunroofs, and quality materials that enhanced its sophisticated feel.

In contrast, the 2023 Volvo XC90 showcased a modern evolution from Volvo's past designs. Its purposeful front end and assertive grille, complemented by the iconic “Thor’s Hammer” headlights, gave it a contemporary flair. The XC90’s dimensions remained somewhat rectilinear, yet it avoided the boxy look of older models. The Ultimate trim featured 21-inch wheels and a rich Platinum Grey paint, adding depth and elegance. Inside, the XC90 exuded Scandinavian minimalism with luxurious materials, including Nappa leather and wood deco inlays, creating a serene and refined atmosphere.

Performance

2023 Kia Carnival

7/10

2023 Volvo XC90

8/10

The 2023 Kia Carnival was equipped with a 3.5-litre V6 engine, delivering 290 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. It featured an eight-speed automatic transmission and offered driving modes like Eco, Normal, Smart, and Sport. Despite its power, the Carnival lacked AWD and hybrid options, which could have improved its 11.1 litres per 100 kilometres fuel economy. The brakes performed well except for a single instance of fade, and the ride quality varied from firm to smooth depending on passenger load.

The 2023 Volvo XC90 introduced the B6 engine with mild-hybrid technology, producing 295 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. This setup offered smoother operation and slightly better fuel efficiency. The XC90’s eight-speed automatic transmission provided seamless shifts, and its handling was surprisingly agile for its size. The brakes inspired confidence, and the cabin remained quiet due to effective insulation. While lacking extensive off-road features, the XC90’s simplicity in driving dynamics appealed to those preferring straightforward operation.

Form and function

2023 Kia Carnival

9/10

2023 Volvo XC90

6/10

The Kia Carnival’s interior defied typical minivan expectations, offering a lower driving position and SUV-like console arrangement. It provided three upholstery options, with the SX trim featuring genuine leather. The Carnival’s three-zone climate control and VIP Lounge Seats in the SX trim added comfort but limited cargo space to 2,460 litres. Without these seats, the Carnival offered a maximum cargo space of 4,110 litres, surpassing many SUVs.

The Volvo XC90’s interior was elegant but had limited storage for small items. The second row was comfortable, but accessing the third row was challenging. With the third row in use, cargo space was 356 litres, expanding to 1,856 litres with all seats folded. This was less than some competitors, but the XC90’s smaller size contributed to its nimble driving experience.

Technology

2023 Kia Carnival

8/10

2023 Volvo XC90

7/10

The Kia Carnival SX featured dual 12.3-inch digital screens, offering impressive graphics and connectivity options like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. However, the Bose audio system was mediocre, and some tech features were cumbersome to use. Additional features included Quiet Mode, Passenger Talk, and a passenger view camera.

The Volvo XC90’s 9-inch touchscreen ran on Google OS, integrating Google Maps and Assistant. While the system excelled in natural language recognition, it relied heavily on the touchscreen for controls, which could be frustrating. Keyless entry was standard, and a head-up display was optional.

Safety

2023 Kia Carnival

9/10

2023 Volvo XC90

9/10

The Kia Carnival came with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including forward-collision warning and lane-keeping assist. The rear-seat reminder system and Highway Driving Assist were notable highlights. The Carnival earned a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS, though its standard headlights received a Poor rating.

Volvo’s XC90 was renowned for safety, featuring standard blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control. It received a five-star NHTSA rating and a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS. The Pilot Assist technology provided excellent support for maintaining safe distances and lane positioning.
