2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS Reviews Summary

The SUV that’s now known as the GLS was launched for the 2007 model year as the GL-Class, when Mercedes decided it needed a bigger, more luxurious SUV to sit above the M-Class in its lineup. The GL-Class and M-Class were rebadged the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class and GLE-Class, respectively, in 2014 when Mercedes introduced a new naming scheme across its lineup.

The current version of the GLS was introduced for the 2020 model year, and represents the model’s third generation. It’s aimed at other full-size luxury SUVs, including the BMW X7, Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, Land Rover Range Rover, Lincoln Navigator, and Lexus LX.

Four models are available in Canada: the base six-cylinder GLS 450 4Matic, the GLS 580 4Matic, the AMG GLS 63 4Matic+, and the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 4Matic. Availability is currently limited, and specifications for the 2022 model year are not available. However, they are expected to be very close to those listed for 2021, which were used as reference for the information provided here. We tested a U.S.-specification 2022 GLS 450 for this review.

2023 BMW X1 Reviews Summary

The all-new, third-generation X1 subcompact crossover is zippy and fun enough to be worthy of the distinction, but with new capability and plenty of cargo space, it’s bringing the utility, too.

Look and feel

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

9/10

2023 BMW X1

8/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS presented a more understated aesthetic in its base GLS 450 form, avoiding the flashy chrome embellishments seen in competitors like the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator. Mercedes opted for a more refined grille design, steering clear of the bold protrusions found on the BMW X7 or Lexus LX. For those seeking a more dramatic appearance, the AMG GLS 63 model offered flared wheel arches, a robust grille, and distinctive exhaust tips, while the Maybach version was adorned with chrome accents and a traditional hood ornament. Inside, the GLS 450 maintained a luxurious feel with leather upholstery, a panoramic roof, and ambient lighting, though it lacked some of the more opulent features like reclining seats. The digital instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen were seamlessly integrated, enhancing the overall luxury SUV experience.

The 2023 BMW X1, meanwhile, evolved from its predecessor with a stronger and more refined design. The larger, squarer kidney grille signalled a robust front fascia, while flush door handles and standard LED lights added to its modern appeal. The X1's colour palette expanded significantly, offering dynamic options like Blue Bay Lagoon and Utah Orange. Inside, the cabin felt premium with the BMW Curved Display dominating the dash, and the SensaTec 2.0 seat coverings provided a comfortable experience. The M Sport Package added sporty elements like bolstered seats and an M leather steering wheel. The X1's interior design was clean and uncluttered, with a sophisticated centre armrest and practical storage solutions.

Performance

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

7/10

2023 BMW X1

9/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 was powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, supported by the Mercedes EQ Boost mild-hybrid system. This setup delivered 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, with an additional 21 hp and 184 lb-ft available from the electric motor. The GLS 450's inline-six engine provided smooth performance, though the air suspension's body control left room for improvement. The GLS 450 boasted a towing capacity of 3,500 kilograms, which was competitive but not class-leading.

In contrast, the 2023 BMW X1 received a significant power boost with its 2.0-litre twin-turbo four-cylinder engine, producing 241 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. This allowed the X1 to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds and tow up to 1,587 kilograms. The new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission enhanced the driving experience, and the Adaptive M Suspension provided minimal body roll, though the ride was slightly stiff. The X1's fuel economy was rated at 9.6 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 7.0 on the highway, with Premium fuel recommended.

Form and function

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

8/10

2023 BMW X1

9/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS offered a spacious interior with a standard seven-seat configuration and an optional six-seat version with captain's chairs. The second-row seats could slide and fold for easy access to the third row, and the GLS provided ample legroom, thanks to its long wheelbase. Cargo space was generous, with 355 litres available with all seats in place and up to 2,400 litres with the second and third rows folded. The GLS featured power-folding seats and a power tailgate for convenience, though some ergonomic issues were noted, such as the touchscreen's reachability.

The 2023 BMW X1 benefited from larger dimensions, offering impressive headroom and competitive legroom in both rows. Cargo space was a strong point, with 727 litres available behind the rear seats and 1,619 litres with them folded. Heated seats were part of the optional Premium Essential Package, which also included a panoramic sunroof and wireless charging. The X1's wireless charging pad was cleverly designed to keep devices secure, even during spirited driving.

Technology

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

7/10

2023 BMW X1

8/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS featured the MBUX infotainment system with a 12.3-inch touchscreen and digital instrument cluster. It offered Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, and natural-language voice recognition. The voice recognition system was particularly effective, allowing for hands-free operation. However, the touchpad controller was cumbersome, and the navigation system occasionally suggested inefficient routes.

The 2023 BMW X1 introduced the BMW Curved Display with iDrive 8, integrating a 10.7-inch infotainment screen and a 10.25-inch driver information display. The system was responsive, though somewhat cluttered with apps. Voice commands worked well for certain functions, but the navigation system required precise inputs. The X1 included Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with the option for a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. The vehicle's controls were intuitive, with a new toggle-style gear selector and a start/stop button.

Safety

2023 BMW X1

7/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS came equipped with a range of standard safety features, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. Additional features like adaptive cruise control and a surround-view camera system were optional. The GLS also included Pre Safe, which prepared the vehicle for a potential collision by tightening seat belts and closing windows.

For 2023, the BMW X1 made active blind-spot monitoring standard, along with a front-collision warning system with pedestrian and cyclist detection. The optional Driving Assistant Professional suite added features like adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning. A 360-degree surround-view camera system was available, and the X1 offered Active Park Distance Control and Back-Up Assistant for added convenience.
