2022 Kia Sportage Reviews SummaryThe 2022 Kia Sportage is a stylish, sophisticated, safe, and–with its available turbocharged engine–speedy SUV. Kia hasn't redesigned it since 2017, but that doesn't mean you should cross it off of your shopping list. Even the technology is up to date. Compact in size, the 2022 Sportage comes in LX, LX Nightsky, EX, EX Premium S, and SX trim levels with front- or all-wheel drive. LX Nightsky trim is new, replacing the LX S version for 2022. The Sportage EX gains a standard panoramic sunroof for 2022. In Canada, MSRP ranges from $25,995 to $40,195, plus a destination charge of $1,850. Our test vehicle for this review was an SX, which comes with the turbocharged engine and standard AWD and was also equipped with a cargo mat and a tow hitch. The sticker price came to $42,746, including destination (Canadian, estimated). (A U.S. model is shown; the exterior colour on the test unit is not available in Canada, where the SX comes only with red, white, grey, or black paint.)
2023 Subaru Forester Reviews SummarySheer practicality defines the 2023 Subaru Forester, a compact crossover SUV where form follows function without fail. In turn, the 2023 Forester possesses the power to make your life easier in nearly every respect. From its standard all-wheel drive (AWD) and generous ground clearance to its roomy interior and sizable cargo hold, it effortlessly tackles most daily tasks with a shrug. This year, Subaru continues to refine the Forester, adding next-generation EyeSight safety features and an improved standard infotainment system. Unfortunately, though, the Forester still lacks a turbocharged engine option or an electrified drivetrain.

The 2022 Kia Sportage presented a bold exterior design that was somewhat polarizing. Its tiger-nose grille, while successful on other Kia models, seemed out of place on the Sportage, resembling a Halloween costume mustache. Despite this, the Sportage excelled in other design aspects, such as its Porsche Macan-like running lights and Volkswagen-inspired rear symmetry. The SX trim's 19-inch alloy wheels added to its stylish and planted stance. Inside, the Sportage boasted a Germanic design with a black dashboard, polished metallic accents, and user-friendly controls, creating an upscale feel.
In contrast, the 2023 Subaru Forester prioritized function over form, maintaining a consistent design reminiscent of its predecessors. The Premier trim, however, stood out with its 18-inch alloy wheels and satin chrome exterior trim. The Forester's design was practical, with robust roof rails and a high static-weight rating for adventurous outings. Inside, the Premier trim offered brown leather and metallic accents, though hard plastics were prevalent. The Forester's interior was busy but functional, with traditional buttons and knobs for easy control access, reflecting its utilitarian nature.

The 2022 Kia Sportage offered two engine options: a 2.4-litre four-cylinder with 181 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque, and a more powerful 237 hp engine with 260 lb-ft of torque in the SX trim. Both engines were paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, and the Dynamax all-wheel-drive system was standard on most trims. The Sportage SX delivered quick acceleration, though the torque's sudden surge could surprise drivers. The suspension provided a smooth ride, with some body roll and lateral rocking, but overall, it offered a sophisticated driving experience.
The 2023 Subaru Forester featured a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The Forester's SI-Drive system and X-Mode off-road traction control enhanced its performance, especially in challenging conditions. The Forester Premier demonstrated excellent driving dynamics, with responsive steering, effective brakes, and a well-tuned suspension. However, the engine was merely adequate, and the Forester's fuel economy fell short of expectations. A turbocharged engine or hybrid option would have been welcome additions.
The 2022 Kia Sportage, though compact, offered a spacious passenger compartment. The SX trim provided luxurious features like perforated leather seats, power adjustments, and heated and ventilated front seats. Rear passengers enjoyed generous legroom and amenities like air conditioning vents and USB ports. However, the Sportage's cargo space was limited, with 1,703 litres available with the rear seats folded. The smart liftgate technology was a convenient feature, though it could be turned off if not needed.
The 2023 Subaru Forester prioritized practicality, with features like a panoramic sunroof, power-adjustable seats, and heated elements available from the Touring trim. The Forester's visibility was excellent, thanks to its high seating position and large windows. However, the panoramic sunroof's lack of tinting could lead to excessive solar heating. The Forester's cargo space was generous, with 1,957 litres available with the rear seats folded, and the power liftgate revealed a well-shaped cargo area with additional storage options.
The 2022 Kia Sportage came equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, and smartphone connectivity. The SX trim added UVO Intelligence services, satellite radio, and a premium Harman Kardon audio system. While the infotainment system was user-friendly, it lacked advanced features like a WiFi hotspot and wireless smartphone mirroring, making it feel somewhat outdated.
The 2023 Subaru Forester offered a 6.5-inch touchscreen with connectivity features, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. An 8-inch display with navigation and a Harman Kardon audio system was available. The Forester's infotainment system was straightforward, with separate climate controls and easy-to-use knobs. However, the voice-recognition system was unreliable, making smartphone integration a more practical choice for navigation and other functions.
The 2022 Kia Sportage's EX and SX trims included safety features like forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping assistance. The SX trim also offered adaptive cruise control. The Sportage received favourable crash-test ratings, with the SX earning an IIHS Top Safety Pick designation.
The 2023 Subaru Forester introduced an updated EyeSight system with improved software and cameras. Adaptive cruise control was standard, and higher trims added features like Automatic Emergency Steering and Rear Automatic Braking. The Forester's safety systems generally performed well, though the RAB system could be overly sensitive. The Forester earned a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS and five-star ratings from the NHTSA, though it fell short in some new tests.
