2022 Ford Explorer Reviews Summary

Two years ago, Ford redesigned its popular Explorer midsize three-row SUV. It moved to a rear-drive platform, added an optional hybrid powertrain, and offered everything from a value-rich base model to a luxurious Platinum trim level. Since then, Ford has added ST-Line and Timberline trim levels while simultaneously honing the Explorer’s packaging to appeal to the broadest cross-section of Canadians possible.

2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Reviews Summary

The Volkswagen ID.4 electric car is still relatively new to the marketplace (it debuted for the 2021 model year) but VW is already making some important updates to keep it competitive and fulfil goals set when this compact electric SUV first launched.

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 adds a new base model and a smaller 62-kilowatt-hour battery pack alongside the carryover 82-kWh to increase affordability. VW will also begin sourcing cars for its North American dealerships from the same Chattanooga, Tennessee, factory that builds the gasoline-powered Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport. The automaker has been discussing this since the ID.4 was unveiled, but at first cars for our market came from Zwickau, Germany.

The 2023 ID.4 retains single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) and dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) powertrain options, but gets revised exterior and interior styling, some software changes, and a few more standard tech features and driver aids.

The new-for-2023 base model is dubbed simply ID.4, slotting below the ID.4 Pro and ID.4 Pro AWD. We recently spent a day on a test drive with the U.S. equivalent of the ID.4 Pro AWD model, along with a shorter drive in a base ID.4 model.

2022 Ford Explorer

8/10

2023 Volkswagen ID.4

8/10

The 2022 Ford Explorer offered Canadians a range of six models, with prices starting from $47,799 to $66,759, excluding a $2,095 destination charge. The lineup expanded with the rugged Timberline trim, and the new ST-Line added a sporty flair to the XLT version. The Explorer's design, based on a rear-drive platform, featured a long and tall hood, short front overhang, and a rakish roofline, giving it a taut, athletic appearance. The blacked-out roof pillars created a "floating roof" effect, popular from previous generations. Inside, higher-trim Explorers showcased a mix of quality and questionable materials, mostly justifying their price but occasionally reminding drivers of the base trim.

In contrast, the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 underwent subtle styling changes, including gloss black trim on the front bumper and a more squared-off rear bumper for improved aerodynamics. New wheel designs and colours were introduced, and the rear VW logo was illuminated. The ID.4, based on VW’s MEB platform, was easily distinguishable as an EV but lacked the traditional SUV profile and ground clearance. Despite this, it offered a minimalist interior design with quality materials, even in the base model. The ID.4's interior was praised for its spaciousness, offering more legroom and headroom than many affordable EVs, and its cargo space was substantial compared to other entry-level EVs.

Performance

2022 Ford Explorer

9/10

2023 Volkswagen ID.4

8/10

The 2022 Ford Explorer offered three powertrains. The XLT, ST-Line, and Timberline trims featured a turbocharged 2.3-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder engine with 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and standard 4WD in Canada. This engine had a towing capacity of 2,400 kilograms and consumed between 10.3 and 11.8 litres per 100 kilometres. The Explorer Limited offered a hybrid drivetrain with a 3.3-litre V6 engine, producing 318 hp and 322 lb-ft of torque, towing up to 2,268 kg, and achieving 9.6 L/100 km. The twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine, standard on the ST and Platinum trims, delivered 400 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque, with a towing capacity of 2,540 kg and fuel consumption of 11.8 L/100 km. The Explorer provided a robust ride, capable off-road, and engaging handling, especially in the sport-tuned ST version.

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 featured a new 62-kWh battery pack for the base model with RWD, while the Pro model retained the 82-kWh pack, available with RWD or AWD. The single electric motor RWD models produced 201 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque, while the dual-motor AWD powertrain increased output to 295 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque, achieving 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. The smaller battery pack reduced curb weight by 109 kilograms, enhancing acceleration and handling. The ID.4's AWD version offered acceleration comparable to hot hatchbacks but lacked the handling finesse. Regenerative braking was present but did not support one-pedal driving, providing a more familiar experience for new EV drivers.

Form and function

2022 Ford Explorer

2023 Volkswagen ID.4

7/10

The 2022 Ford Explorer provided ample comfort for families of four, with the option to carry five with a second-row bench seat. However, the third-row seat was suitable only for children due to the rear-drive platform and low roofline. Higher trims offered features like triple-zone climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated second-row captain’s chairs. The front seats were exceptionally comfortable, with available massaging, while the second-row seats were nearly as accommodating. The Explorer's interior lacked practical storage solutions, but it offered 528 litres of cargo space behind the third row, expanding to 2,132 litres with all rear seats folded.

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 excelled in interior space, offering more legroom and headroom than competitors like the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Nissan Leaf. It provided 858 litres of cargo space with the rear seats up and 1,818 litres with them folded. The ID.4 also offered some towing capability, with RWD models towing up to 1,000 kilograms and AWD models up to 1,225 kg. Interior updates for 2023 included a conventional lid for the centre console and improved phone storage, along with available three-zone climate control and heated rear seats.

Technology

The 2022 Ford Explorer featured two versions of the Sync 3 infotainment system, with an 8-inch or 10.1-inch touchscreen. The larger screen appeared as an afterthought, while the smaller screen integrated well with the interior. The system included FordPass Connect, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 14-speaker Bang and Olufsen sound system. However, the outdated Sync 3 system struggled with voice recognition, and Ford needed to upgrade to Sync 4. Additional tech included a 12.3-inch digital display and Active Park Assist 2.0.

For 2023, the Volkswagen ID.4 made the 12.0-inch touchscreen standard, with software updates for improved responsiveness. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto remained standard, along with the ID.Cockpit digital instrument cluster. The infotainment system offered sharp graphics and natural-language voice recognition, but the haptic touchpads on the dashboard and steering wheel were distracting. The ID.Light system provided ambient lighting and navigation cues, adding a unique touch to the driving experience.

Safety

2023 Volkswagen ID.4

9/10

The 2022 Ford Explorer earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS, with standard Ford Co-Pilot360 features like forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping assist. Co-Pilot360 Assist+ added adaptive cruise control and evasive steering assist. The Explorer's safety systems operated smoothly, though the steering wheel sensitivity could be improved.

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, with top scores in frontal and side crash tests. The 2022 model's IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating suggested similar safety performance for 2023. Standard safety features included forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with cyclist detection, and VW’s Travel Assist 2.0. New for 2023 were Park Assist Plus and an automated lane-change feature.
