2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Reviews Summary

The summer of 2022 has been a doozy. Gas prices went sky high and heat waves rolled across the country. If you’re rethinking the purchase of a three-row SUV and trying to find a fuel-efficient solution that emits greenhouse gas emissions only part of the time, the seven-passenger Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid might be a good solution. It doesn’t offer all-wheel drive (AWD) as other Pacificas do, but it has a plug-in hybrid powertrain supplying a Natural Resources Canada-rated 51 kilometres of electric range before the gasoline V6 engine fires up to deliver 8.0 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving.

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS Reviews Summary

The SUV that’s now known as the GLS was launched for the 2007 model year as the GL-Class, when Mercedes decided it needed a bigger, more luxurious SUV to sit above the M-Class in its lineup. The GL-Class and M-Class were rebadged the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class and GLE-Class, respectively, in 2014 when Mercedes introduced a new naming scheme across its lineup.

The current version of the GLS was introduced for the 2020 model year, and represents the model’s third generation. It’s aimed at other full-size luxury SUVs, including the BMW X7, Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, Land Rover Range Rover, Lincoln Navigator, and Lexus LX.

Four models are available in Canada: the base six-cylinder GLS 450 4Matic, the GLS 580 4Matic, the AMG GLS 63 4Matic+, and the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 4Matic. Availability is currently limited, and specifications for the 2022 model year are not available. However, they are expected to be very close to those listed for 2021, which were used as reference for the information provided here. We tested a U.S.-specification 2022 GLS 450 for this review.

2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

5/10

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

9/10

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, despite its minivan label, offered a practical and efficient solution for families. While it didn't boast the rugged image of a midsize crossover SUV, it provided the convenience of sliding side doors, making it easier to load children in tight spaces. The Pacifica Hybrid was unique in its class as a plug-in hybrid minivan, offering an electric-only driving range that was unmatched by any three-row SUV from mainstream brands. However, its styling was considered soft and dated, and it came with a hefty price tag, even after factoring in federal EV rebates. The interior, though comfortable with premium leather, lacked the modern, architectural design seen in some competitors.

In contrast, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS exuded a more subtle luxury compared to its flashier rivals like the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator. The base GLS 450 model maintained a refined appearance without resorting to excessive chrome or gaudy grilles. Buyers seeking more visual drama could opt for the AMG GLS 63 or the Maybach version, which added distinctive styling elements and luxurious features. The interior of the GLS 450, while not overly extravagant, felt appropriately luxurious with its leather upholstery, panoramic roof, and ambient lighting. The digital instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen were well-integrated, enhancing the overall sense of quality.

Performance

2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

8/10

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

7/10

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid was powered by a 3.6-litre V6 engine paired with a dual-motor electric drive system, delivering a total of 260 horsepower. The plug-in hybrid system allowed for an electric-only range of up to 51 kilometres, making it ideal for short commutes and errands. The Pacifica Hybrid's powertrain seamlessly transitioned between electric and gasoline modes, providing a smooth driving experience. However, the driving dynamics were less engaging, with light steering and unremarkable regenerative brakes. Despite its dull driving experience, the Pacifica Hybrid impressed with its efficient powertrain, achieving an average fuel economy of 6.3 litres per 100 kilometres.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 featured a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine with a nine-speed automatic transmission, producing 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The EQ Boost mild-hybrid system added an extra 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque in short bursts. The GLS 450's engine provided ample power, and the electric assist was well-integrated. However, the air suspension exhibited poor body control, leading to excessive motion over bumps and in corners. The GLS 450 had a towing capacity of 3,500 kilograms, which was competitive but not class-leading.

Form and function

2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

9/10

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

8/10

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid excelled in comfort and utility, offering three comfortable rows of seats and ample cargo space. With 914 litres of cargo space behind the third row and up to 3,978 litres with the second-row seats removed, it provided more storage than many full-size SUVs. The interior featured quality leather upholstery, triple-zone climate control, and a range of storage solutions. However, the second-row seats needed to be removed to maximize cargo space, unlike the standard Pacifica's Stow n' Go seats.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS offered a spacious interior with a seven-seat configuration and an optional six-seat version with captain's chairs. The second-row seats could slide forward for easy access to the third row, and the GLS boasted excellent legroom. Cargo space was 355 litres with all seats in place, expanding to 2,400 litres with the second and third rows folded. The GLS featured power-folding seats and a power tailgate for convenience, but some ergonomic issues, such as the touchscreen's reach and sun visor size, were noted.

Technology

2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

8/10

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

7/10

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid was equipped with the Uconnect 5 infotainment system, featuring a 10.1-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a FamCam overhead camera system. While the system was user-friendly, the voice recognition technology was inconsistent. The optional 20-speaker Harman Kardon sound system required adjustments for optimal sound quality. The Pacifica also offered Amazon Fire TV for rear-seat entertainment, though it was deemed unnecessary by some users.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS came with the MBUX infotainment system, including a 12.3-inch touchscreen, digital instrument cluster, and natural-language voice recognition. The system offered multiple control options, but the voice recognition was the most effective. The GLS featured augmented-reality navigation, though the embedded system occasionally suggested inefficient routes. The optional Burmester audio system and head-up display added to the luxury experience.

Safety

2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

8/10

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

6/10

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid boasted a comprehensive suite of standard safety features, including a rear-seat reminder system. It earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA. However, the adaptive cruise control system required refinement, as it was slow to respond to changing traffic conditions.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS offered a range of standard safety features, such as forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. Optional features included adaptive cruise control and advanced driver-assistance systems. Crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA were not available at the time of publication.
