2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer Reviews Summary

Stylish, affordable, and practical, the 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer appeals to a broad cross-section of consumers from the young to the young at heart. Chevy introduced this subcompact crossover SUV as all-new last year, and for 2022 a heated steering wheel and a handful of new paint colours are available. A dealer-installed trailering package is also new for 2022, but with nothing but three-cylinder engines on tap, towing cannot be a good idea.

2023 Acura RDX Reviews Summary

The Acura RDX may not be the newest luxury SUV, but it can still compete against newer rivals thanks to its strong performance, high levels of comfort, and relatively affordable price. We're no fans of its infotainment interface, but we think most shoppers will eventually get used to its idiosyncrasies.

Look and feel

2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer

7/10

2023 Acura RDX

6/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer was more than just a pretty face, though its appealing styling certainly added to its charm. Chevrolet nailed the proportions, character lines, and intricate details, making the Trailblazer a visually attractive option. The availability of a black, white, or red-painted roof further enhanced its appeal. In Canada, the Trailblazer was available in four trims: LS, LT, Activ, and RS, with prices ranging from $25,998 to $30,298. The RS trim, which we tested, had a starting MSRP of $30,298, but options pushed the price to $37,653, including the destination charge. Despite its stylish interior, the cabin was filled with hard plastics, which detracted from its overall value proposition.

The 2023 Acura RDX stood out with its sharp, angular style, though it remained conventional enough to blend in with other small SUVs. The signature Acura grille, flanked by sleek wraparound headlights, gave the RDX a sporty and aggressive look. The side profile featured a distinctive character line, while the rear was more conventional. Inside, the RDX took a different approach with a vertical dashboard layout, emphasizing performance with gear-selector buttons and a drive-mode dial. The interior, while not as modern as some rivals, offered a familiar feel for those averse to the latest tech-heavy designs. The RDX's cabin was a blend of older design updated with newer tech features, appealing to those who preferred a more traditional setup.

Performance

2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer

6/10

2023 Acura RDX

6/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer was powered by a turbocharged 1.3-litre three-cylinder engine, producing 155 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque. This engine, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) in front-wheel-drive models, provided a sprightly driving experience. Opting for all-wheel drive (AWD) added a more satisfying nine-speed automatic transmission and a sophisticated rear suspension design, enhancing ride and handling. The RS trim featured 18-inch aluminum wheels with all-season tires, contributing to its nimble and zippy nature. However, the Trailblazer was loud on highways, and its suspension struggled with speed bumps. Off-road, caution was needed to avoid damaging the underside. Fuel consumption averaged 9.0 litres per 100 kilometres, slightly above the official rating.

The 2023 Acura RDX featured a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, delivering 272 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive was standard, known as "super-handling all-wheel drive" (SH-AWD). The RDX accelerated to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds, with immediate throttle response and a pleasing engine sound. The transmission was adept at selecting the right gear, and the brakes offered reassuring firmness. The RDX's handling inspired confidence, with well-managed body roll and abundant traction. Adaptive dampers on the Platinum Elite A-Spec trim provided a sporty yet comfortable ride, smoothing over road imperfections with ease.

Form and function

2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer

8/10

2023 Acura RDX

7/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer, despite its small size, offered impressive functionality. It could accommodate four people comfortably, with a 10-way power-adjustable driver seat in the RS trim. The rear seat, though roomy, was shaped like a park bench, prioritizing a flat load floor over passenger comfort. The Trailblazer provided 716 litres of cargo space, expandable to 1,540 litres with the rear seats folded. The front passenger seat also folded flat, allowing for long items up to 2.5 metres.

The 2023 Acura RDX provided ample space for taller adults in the front seats, with additional power adjustments in the top trim. The standard heated and ventilated front seats, along with a heated steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, and a panoramic moonroof, enhanced comfort. The rear seats accommodated average-sized adults, though taller passengers might find headroom limited. Cargo space was generous, with 835 litres behind the rear seats, expandable to 1,668 litres. The RDX offered numerous storage options for smaller items, though the centre stack's design could be more space-efficient.

Technology

2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer

7/10

2023 Acura RDX

4/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer featured a comprehensive infotainment system with a 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreen. Standard features included Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, with options for a Wi-Fi hotspot and a 7-speaker Bose audio system. The system was user-friendly, with appealing graphics and intuitive controls. However, beyond remote engine starting and a keyless entry keypad, the Trailblazer lacked advanced technologies.

The 2023 Acura RDX's infotainment system used a touchpad controller, which was challenging to use, especially while driving. The dashtop display was not a touchscreen, but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto improved the experience. The system featured sharp graphics and quick responses, but the interface was one of the least user-friendly. Standard features included Bluetooth, SiriusXM, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a 16-speaker ELS Studio audio system.

Safety

2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer

9/10

2023 Acura RDX

7/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer prioritized safety with 10 airbags, a rear-seat reminder, and Teen Driver technology. Chevy Safety Assist was standard, offering forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and more. Optional features included blind-spot warning and adaptive cruise control. The Trailblazer earned top crash-test ratings from both the NHTSA and IIHS.

The 2023 Acura RDX received five stars from the NHTSA for overall and side crash protection and was named a Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS. Standard safety features included forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and more. The Platinum Elite A-Spec package added a surround-view camera and head-up display. The systems worked well, with smooth adaptive cruise control and some minor issues with lane-keep assist.
