2022 BMW 2 Series Reviews Summary

Sent as a replacement for the discontinued BMW 1 Series, the 2 Series has flourished in the entry-level luxury car segment, outselling its competition last year. Redesigned for 2022, the BMW 2 Series features a refreshed look, larger proportions, increased power, and more performance than is reasonable for a subcompact.

2023 Volkswagen Jetta Reviews Summary

The popularity of sedans such as the Jetta might have tumbled as buyers flock to big SUVs and even bigger pickups, but there's still plenty to like about VW's family car.

The base 1.5-litre gas engine's 158 horsepower is plenty for a front-drive family car, and can be paired with either manual or automatic transmission. And for those who get a kick from driving, there's the sportier Jetta GLI with retuned suspension and a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine pumping out 228 horsepower.

All 2023 Jettas feature a pleasant if not very exciting interior design. To make it as smart as possible, we recommend going for SEL trim or above to get VW's upgraded 10.25-inch digital dials and an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen.

Look and feel

2022 BMW 2 Series

8/10

2023 Volkswagen Jetta

7/10

The 2022 BMW 2 Series presented a fresh exterior design that diverged from the aggressive front fascia seen in other BMW models. It maintained a sleek and aerodynamic appearance with a wider kidney grille and upright triangular air curtains. The M240i xDrive Coupe, in particular, showcased a performance-oriented style with shadowy M-type accents and the M Shadowline package. The interior was driver-focused, featuring standard perforated SensaTec upholstery and optional Vernasca leather. The 2 Series Coupe offered a straightforward yet high-end vibe, although some cost-cutting plastics were noticeable.

In contrast, the 2023 Volkswagen Jetta was known for its conservative and inoffensive design. The Jetta SEL trim aimed to channel a more upscale feel, reminiscent of the Audi luxury brand, with ambient lighting, genuine leather upholstery, and a large sunroof. The interior was practical and spacious, providing a comfortable experience for both driver and passengers. The Jetta's design was more about functionality and subtle elegance, appealing to those who preferred a classic sedan look.

Performance

2022 BMW 2 Series

7/10

2023 Volkswagen Jetta

7/10

The 2022 BMW 2 Series was a powerhouse in its subcompact class. The 230i Coupe featured a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, while the M240i xDrive boasted a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six producing 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The 230i Coupe accelerated to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, and the M240i xDrive achieved it in just 4.1 seconds. Both models had a top speed of either 130 mph or 155 mph, depending on specifications. The eight-speed Sport automatic transmission was standard, offering smooth shifts and quick responses with paddle shifters. The M240i xDrive came with performance features like an aerodynamic kit, adaptive M suspension, and M Sport brakes, providing stability and agility.

The 2023 Volkswagen Jetta, while not a sports sedan, offered a pleasant driving experience with its 1.5-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine, delivering 158 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The Jetta's light and responsive steering, combined with a soft suspension, made it nimble in urban settings. The SE and SEL trims featured an eight-speed automatic transmission with a Sport mode, although there was a noticeable delay in acceleration. The Jetta SEL achieved an average of 30 mpg in combined driving. Despite its modest power, the Jetta provided a rewarding drive with accurate steering and predictable handling, especially on mountain roads.

Form and function

2022 BMW 2 Series

5/10

2023 Volkswagen Jetta

8/10

The 2022 BMW 2 Series was compact, with rear seats best suited for children or short trips. The front seats offered relative comfort, but the slanted roofline limited rear headroom. The trunk provided 10 cubic feet of cargo space, with 40/20/40-split fold-down rear seats for added versatility. The interior featured soft touchpoints and improved ergonomics, with multifunction buttons on the leather-wrapped sport steering wheel.

The 2023 Volkswagen Jetta, on the other hand, offered ample space for a family of four. The interior was roomy, with generous storage options and a cavernous trunk providing 14.1 cubic feet of cargo space. The Jetta SEL featured an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, heated and ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. The back seat was easily accessible, with large doors and a supportive seat cushion. The Jetta's design prioritized practicality and comfort, making it a suitable choice for daily commuting and family use.

2023 Volkswagen Jetta

The 2022 BMW 2 Series came equipped with an 8.8-inch touchscreen and a 5.1-inch driver information display, featuring BMW Live Cockpit Plus with over-the-air updates, cloud-based navigation, and real-time traffic updates. The infotainment system supported wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. An optional Live Cockpit Professional upgraded the system to a 10.25-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital display. The 2 Series also offered remote features like the BMW Digital Key and a 10-speaker Hi-Fi sound system, with an optional Harman Kardon 14-speaker system.

The 2023 Volkswagen Jetta SEL featured a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrumentation panel and an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with proximity-sensing and shortcut tiles. The system supported wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as SiriusXM 360L premium satellite radio. The Jetta's infotainment system had some usability quirks, but Car-Net connected services provided a Wi-Fi hotspot and remote features for five years. The SEL trim included a Beats Audio premium sound system, though it was not as satisfying as previous Fender systems.

Safety

8/10

2023 Volkswagen Jetta

7/10

The 2022 BMW 2 Series was equipped with Active Driving Assistant, including active blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. Optional features included adaptive front LED headlights, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, and a 360-degree surround view. The BMW Drive Recorder could capture driving footage before and after a collision. The 2 Series had not yet been rated by the IIHS or NHTSA.

The 2023 Volkswagen Jetta SE and SEL came with IQ.Drive, featuring adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assist, and Emergency Assist. Travel Assist provided semi-autonomous driving, working well on challenging roads. Emergency Assist could identify an unresponsive driver and safely stop the car. The Jetta received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA but had four-star ratings for frontal-impact protection. The IIHS rated the Jetta's safety as Poor in a new moderate overlap frontal-impact crash test.
