2021 Volkswagen Jetta Reviews Summary

Small cars aren't asked to do much beyond the basics: provide efficient, reliable transportation at a manageable price. Plenty of models fit this form, and in some rare cases, they manage to do it while also being fun to drive, like the Mazda3. In other cases, the vehicle manages to feel more upscale than the competition, like the Honda Civic. But the Volkswagen Jetta's legacy has historically been defined by its ability to offer both an upscale interior and a rewarding driving experience.

But then something happened with the Jetta. Starting with the 2011 model year, Volkswagen attempted to broaden the Jetta's appeal, and until 2018 we were left with a drab interior, an underpowered engine, and an uninspiring driving experience. VW’s hallmark was always that its cars felt a little special, so by adopting a homogenous look and feel, VW removed what made the Jetta unique and desirable to its fans.

So Volkswagen had some work to do with the seventh-generation Jetta, which launched in 2019. Does this car move the Jetta name back toward driving refinement and upscale feel? Or does it continue to disappoint as just another bland entrant among small cars?

2022 Honda Civic Hatchback Reviews Summary

The very first Honda Civic was a hatchback. In fact, except for the period between 2006 and 2016, a hatch was almost always a part of the Honda Civic lineup. Now in its 11th generation, redesigned for 2022, the Honda Civic is again available as a hatchback, and the automaker expects it to be more popular than at any time since the 1990s. There is good reason for this optimism, as we discovered while giving a test drive to two versions of the new Civic hatchback.

Look and feel

2021 Volkswagen Jetta

8/10

2022 Honda Civic Hatchback

9/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Jetta presented a more upscale presence compared to its predecessor, with a slightly longer and wider body, maintaining the same height. Its design featured a wide, angular grille inspired by the VW Arteon sport sedan, which added a dramatic flair to its appearance. Inside, the Jetta continued the angular design language, creating a cabin that was both spacious and functional, with a premium feel due to the soft-touch surfaces and comfortable seating. The Jetta offered three trim levels: Comfortline, Highline, and Execline, each with varying features, from heated seats and mirrors in the base trim to a digital instrument cluster and leather upholstery in the top-tier Execline.

The 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback aimed to capture the remaining market share for hatchbacks, with its production in North America being a notable point. The Civic hatchback shared its front design with the sedan but differed from the rear, maintaining a distinct hatchback style. The interior featured sophisticated digital instrumentation and infotainment displays, especially in the Sport Touring trim, which added a modern touch. The Civic hatchback offered three trims: LX, Sport, and Sport Touring, with the latter providing a more comprehensive set of features, including a 9-inch touchscreen and a 12-speaker Bose audio system. Despite some minor complaints about seating adjustments and rear air conditioning, the Civic hatchback was praised for its practicality and comfort.
