2021 Volkswagen Jetta Reviews Summary

Small cars aren't asked to do much beyond the basics: provide efficient, reliable transportation at a manageable price. Plenty of models fit this form, and in some rare cases, they manage to do it while also being fun to drive, like the Mazda3. In other cases, the vehicle manages to feel more upscale than the competition, like the Honda Civic. But the Volkswagen Jetta's legacy has historically been defined by its ability to offer both an upscale interior and a rewarding driving experience.

But then something happened with the Jetta. Starting with the 2011 model year, Volkswagen attempted to broaden the Jetta's appeal, and until 2018 we were left with a drab interior, an underpowered engine, and an uninspiring driving experience. VW’s hallmark was always that its cars felt a little special, so by adopting a homogenous look and feel, VW removed what made the Jetta unique and desirable to its fans.

So Volkswagen had some work to do with the seventh-generation Jetta, which launched in 2019. Does this car move the Jetta name back toward driving refinement and upscale feel? Or does it continue to disappoint as just another bland entrant among small cars?

2021 Honda Accord Reviews Summary

For the 2021 model year, Honda is taking the Accord sedan in a more elevated direction. The company has refined the Accord’s features list and priced it right to compete against other heavyweights in the industry. Honda has made safety a priority in the 2021 Accord, helping this fresh version earn high praise.

2021 Volkswagen Jetta

8/10

2021 Honda Accord

9/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Jetta presented a more upscale presence compared to its predecessor, with a slightly longer body and wheelbase, and a wider stance by about 2.5 centimetres. Its design was inspired by the VW Arteon sport sedan, featuring a wide, angular grille that added a dramatic flair to its appearance. Inside, the Jetta continued this angular design language, creating a cabin that was both spacious and functional, with a premium feel thanks to strategically placed soft-touch surfaces. The Jetta was available in Comfortline, Highline, and Execline trims, each offering a range of features from heated seats and mirrors to a digital instrument cluster and a premium audio system.

The 2021 Honda Accord, refreshed for the model year, showcased a wider, restyled grille that gave it a more sculpted face. The Accord's design was sophisticated, with LED headlights and a new alloy wheel design for most trims. Inside, the Accord offered a spacious and well-designed cabin with high-quality materials, even in lower trims. The interior featured dual-zone climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a power moonroof from the Sport trim upwards. The Accord's trunk provided 473 litres of cargo space, surpassing most midsize sedans, and the rear seats could fold down for additional storage flexibility.

This setup allowed the Jetta to deliver power efficiently across various speeds, making it suitable for both city and highway driving. The Jetta's steering was well-weighted and precise, offering a smooth yet sporty driving experience. Fuel efficiency was impressive, with the manual transmission achieving 6.9 L/100 km combined and the automatic 7.1 L/100 km combined.

The 2021 Honda Accord offered two engine options: a 192-horsepower 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder and a more powerful 252-horsepower 2.0-litre turbo-four. The smaller engine was paired with a CVT, while the larger one came with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Accord's driving dynamics were engaging, with pointed steering and easy maneuverability. Fuel economy varied between the engines, with the 1.5-litre achieving 7.2 to 7.5 L/100 km combined, depending on the trim, and the 2.0-litre consuming 9.1 L/100 km combined.
