2021 Subaru Crosstrek Reviews Summary

The Crosstrek applies the successful formula of the Subaru Outback to a smaller vehicle. Like the Outback, the Crosstrek is an ordinary car that gets a raised ride height and plastic body cladding to make it look like an SUV, plus standard all-wheel drive. But while the Outback is based on the Subaru Legacy, the Crosstrek is a derivative of the Subaru Impreza.

Subaru launched the Crosstrek for the 2013 model year as a replacement for the Outback Sport. The current Crosstrek was introduced for the 2018 model year as the second generation of the model.

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek is the same basic vehicle as before, but gets a handful of notable updates. In Canada, new Outdoor trim level joins the previous Convenience, Touring, and Sport, and Limited trim levels, and a 2.5-litre engine is now available alongside the previous 2.0-litre engine. The 2021 Crosstrek also gets an upgraded version of Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assistance system.

2022 Subaru Ascent Reviews Summary

Subaru owners are a loyal bunch, and for good reason. The automaker’s cars and SUVs enjoy reputations for durability, safety, and getting you where you need to go regardless of weather and road conditions. But there is only one Subaru made to carry more than five people, and it’s the Ascent midsize three-row SUV. This year, Subaru makes one change to the 2022 Ascent lineup, adding a new Onyx Edition with blacked-out exterior trim and water-resistant upholstery.

Look and feel

2021 Subaru Crosstrek

8/10

2022 Subaru Ascent

6/10

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek was a clever adaptation of the Impreza hatchback, designed to meet the growing demand for crossovers with rugged aesthetics and all-wheel drive (AWD). By incorporating black body cladding, model-specific alloy wheels, and a taller ride height, the Crosstrek successfully mimicked the SUV look while maintaining the Impreza's core design. This transformation gave the Crosstrek a distinct character, further enhanced by vibrant colour options like Plasma Yellow Pearl. Despite these changes, the interior remained largely unchanged from the Impreza, offering functionality but lacking in flair, with some accents clashing with exterior colours.

In contrast, the 2022 Subaru Ascent introduced a new Onyx Edition trim, featuring a blacked-out exterior that added a sporty touch to the SUV. The Ascent's interior was equipped with water-repellant StarTex synthetic leather and a grey two-tone scheme, providing a modern yet practical feel. However, the StarTex material had a tendency to trap sweat, which could be uncomfortable on hot days. The Ascent's design focused on practicality and comfort, with features like triple-zone climate control and heated elements, making it well-suited for harsh weather conditions.

Performance

2021 Subaru Crosstrek

7/10

2022 Subaru Ascent

8/10

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek offered two engine options: a 2.0-litre boxer-four engine producing 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque, and a more powerful 2.5-litre engine delivering 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. The Crosstrek's AWD system was standard across all trims, enhancing its capability on various terrains. While the higher ride height affected handling, the Crosstrek maintained a comfortable ride with low wind noise. The new 2.5-litre engine provided a slight boost in power, but the CVT's droning noise was noticeable during acceleration.

The 2022 Subaru Ascent was powered by a turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine, generating 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. The CVT, with its eight programmed ratios, offered smooth acceleration and commendable passing power. The Ascent's towing capacity of up to 2,270 kilograms was impressive for its class. Equipped with Subaru's X-Mode off-road traction control system, the Ascent provided enhanced off-road capability. Despite its size, the Ascent felt nimble in urban settings, though its braking response could be overly sensitive. On highways, the Ascent's lane-keeping technology sometimes created an unstable driving experience.

Form and function

2022 Subaru Ascent

6/10

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek shared its interior dimensions with the Impreza hatchback, offering competitive passenger space but limited cargo capacity. With 588 litres of cargo space with the rear seats up and 1,565 litres with them folded, the Crosstrek lagged behind some competitors. The driving position was higher than the Impreza's, but visibility remained excellent due to the large side windows. The Crosstrek's interior featured practical storage solutions, though rear-seat passengers had limited access to USB ports.

The 2022 Subaru Ascent accommodated up to eight passengers, though the third row was best suited for children. The Ascent's interior was designed for comfort, with features like heated front seats and a wiper de-icer. The second-row seats were easily accessible, and the available captain's chairs added convenience. The Ascent offered ample cargo space, with 458 litres behind the third row and up to 2,061 litres with both rows folded. The dashboard included a useful storage shelf, and the panoramic sunroof enhanced the cabin's airy feel.

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek featured the Starlink infotainment system, with a standard 6.5-inch touchscreen and an optional 8-inch display on higher trims. The system supported Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth connectivity. The Crosstrek's infotainment was user-friendly, with large analog controls for essential functions. EyeSight driver-assistance features were accessible via steering wheel buttons, ensuring ease of use.

The 2022 Subaru Ascent's base trim included a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Higher trims offered an 8-inch display with Starlink connected services. While the system was not Subaru's latest, it was straightforward to use, with physical controls for climate settings. The voice recognition system required improvement, as it struggled with specific commands. The Onyx Edition's standard stereo lacked premium sound quality, and the Harman Kardon system was not available on this trim.

Safety

2022 Subaru Ascent

9/10

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek earned a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA and a "Top Safety Pick" award from the IIHS. EyeSight driver-assist technology was standard on CVT-equipped models, offering features like adaptive cruise control and lane-departure warning. However, the system's cameras could be obstructed by sunlight or wipers, affecting functionality.

The 2022 Subaru Ascent received a "Top Safety Pick+" award from the IIHS and five-star ratings from the NHTSA, except for rollover resistance. EyeSight technology was standard, providing advanced adaptive cruise control and lane-centring. The system's performance was hindered by direct sunlight, and its adaptive cruise control lacked refinement. Additional safety features included steering responsive LED headlights and optional blind-spot monitoring.
