2021 Mercedes-Benz GLB Reviews Summary

With an approachable starting price and a flexible interior layout, the compact 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLB makes its mark by offering an optional third row of seating, bringing its passenger capacity from five to seven. Add that to an already capable and attractive crossover SUV, and you’ve got a reason to join the Mercedes-Benz family with your family.

2022 Lexus RX Reviews Summary

Now on the tail end of this fourth generation, the Lexus RX was last redesigned in 2015 with a mild mid-cycle refresh for the 2020 model year. But to consider the RX long in the tooth would be a mistake: this made-in-Ontario, Canada SUV is the automaker’s best-selling model. A carryover for 2022, the Lexus RX sees minimal changes which include new colours and a standalone fog lamps option.

Look and feel

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLB

8/10

2022 Lexus RX

7/10

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLB, introduced in 2020, was a fresh addition to the Mercedes-Benz SUV lineup, fitting between the smaller GLA and the larger GLC. Despite its unique dimensions, the GLB shared a strong family resemblance with its siblings, making it difficult to distinguish without checking the badge. Its design was characterized by an athletic stance and a generous 20 centimetres of ground clearance, offering a more forgiving ride over uneven surfaces. Inside, the GLB impressed with its modern and stylish cabin, featuring round design elements and polished metal details that evoked an aerospace vibe. The single panel housing the virtual instrument cluster and infotainment screen added to the elegant interior, complemented by the high-quality fit and finish typical of Mercedes-Benz.

The 2022 Lexus RX continued to showcase its modern and sporty design, following a facelift in 2020. Known for its aggressive exterior styling, the RX stood out among its midsize luxury crossover competitors. The sharp character lines and angular features, particularly in the front and rear, created a striking yet balanced design. The F Sport models added a performance-oriented touch with unique features like 20-inch wheels and a distinctive front fascia. Inside, the RX maintained its luxury appeal, with F Sport models adding sporty elements like Scored Aluminum trim and NuLuxe synthetic leather. However, the centre stack felt dated, and the driving position required multiple adjustments for comfort. Despite these drawbacks, the RX offered a high-quality feel and a serene cabin environment.

Performance

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLB

7/10

2022 Lexus RX

7/10

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLB was powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre inline-4 engine, delivering 221 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, the GLB offered a decent performance for its 1,765-kilogram curb weight. It accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds, with a top speed of 210 km/h. The 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system provided better handling in various conditions, and the independent suspension ensured a smooth ride. Fuel consumption was estimated at 11.1 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 8.9 on the highway.

The 2022 Lexus RX 350 featured a 3.5-litre V6 engine producing 295 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque, while the hybrid RX 450h combined the V6 with electric motors for a total of 308 hp. Despite its performance-oriented F Sport designation, the RX's real-world performance was underwhelming, with a lack of sporty driving dynamics. The engine note was more subdued than expected, and acceleration was unimpressive. The RX offered various drive modes, but the differences between them were minimal. However, the RX excelled in driving comfort and cabin quietness, making it a pleasant companion for long drives. Fuel consumption for the RX 350 was estimated at 12.2 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 9.0 on the highway, with the hybrid model offering improved efficiency.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLB offered the option of a third-row seat, which impacted the second row and cargo space. The second row featured adjustable seatbacks and a sliding function, while the third row was suitable for children or short trips. Cargo space varied depending on the seating configuration, with up to 1,755 litres available in the two-row model. The GLB's cabin was well-designed, with comfortable front seats and modern amenities like heated and ventilated seats.

The 2022 Lexus RX provided ample passenger space in its two-row configuration, with 2,826 litres of passenger volume. The three-row L models offered limited space for the third row, making it suitable for short trips or groceries. Cargo capacity ranged from 453 litres behind the second row to 1,657 litres with both back rows down. The RX featured thoughtful interior elements like a smartphone slot and adjustable cup holders, but the rear seats did not fold completely flat, and the load-in height was high.

Advanced options included adaptive suspension damping, ambient lighting, and parking assistance.

The 2022 Lexus RX came with an 8-inch touchscreen display, with a 12.3-inch version available. The infotainment system had ergonomic challenges, with a lip obstructing access to icons. The touchpad was hypersensitive and unintuitive, leading to frustration. However, the RX offered a range of tech features, including USB ports, smartphone integration, wireless charging, and premium audio systems. The Lexus App provided additional connectivity and personalization options.
