2021 Chrysler Pacifica Reviews Summary

The Chrysler Pacifica minivan has undergone a styling and tech refresh for the 2021 model year. It continues to deliver what families want and need from a daily driver. Chrysler continues to offer the model with either a traditional V6 engine or hybrid powertrain and has upped the ante with a new premium Pinnacle trim level. With 97 standard safety features and gobs of well-designed storage space, it’s easy to see why the Pacifica is the perfect choice for many families.

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Reviews Summary

Given the brand’s war-fighting origins, the idea of a luxury Jeep seems a bit oxymoronic. But premium SUVs that combine off-road capability with comfort and opulence are fairly common these days, and Jeep wants in on the action.

Resurrecting a name that dates back to 1984, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is the automaker’s answer to the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, and Lincoln Navigator. Like these rivals, the Wagoneer is a body-on-frame full-size SUV based on a more mainstream model. In this case, that’s the 2022 Wagoneer, which is also new for this model year (and is covered in a separate review).

Jeep considers the Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer to be components of a new sub-brand, sitting atop the rest of its lineup. In addition to the Wagoneer name and a basic platform, both models share exterior and interior styling and many tech features. So there’s less to differentiate a Grand Wagoneer from a Wagoneer than, say, a Lincoln Navigator from a Ford Expedition. The relationship might be more like that of the GMC Yukon to the Chevrolet Tahoe.

To see if the Grand Wagoneer justifies its “grand” nomenclature, we drove it back to back with a standard Wagoneer, navigating city streets and off-road trails. The Grand Wagoneer launches in Series I, Series II, Series III, and Obsidian trim levels. Our test vehicle was the midlevel Series II version.

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

7/10

The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica underwent a significant exterior refresh, featuring new standard LED headlights flanking a hexagonal grille, which contributed to a more muscular appearance compared to its predecessors. Despite this shift, the Pacifica retained elements of its original sophistication, particularly noticeable along its sides and rear, where a new all-LED taillamp spanned the width of the vehicle, adorned with the Chrysler wing badge. The introduction of six new wheel designs and the S Appearance Package, which added darkened features and black accents, further enhanced its aesthetic appeal.

Inside, the Pacifica distinguished itself from competitors like the Toyota Sienna and Kia Carnival by balancing practicality with premium touches. The Pacifica Pinnacle trim exemplified this approach, offering a luxurious experience with features such as a flat dashboard with a 10.1-inch touchscreen, Piano Black plastic trim, wood accents, and quilted Nappa leather seats. The minivan's doors closed with a reassuring thud, and its sound-deadening technology effectively minimized external noise, creating a serene cabin environment.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer shared its frame and body shell with the standard Wagoneer, resulting in a traditional SUV design with a tall hood, broad shoulders, and an upright profile. However, the Grand Wagoneer distinguished itself with a black roof, model-specific hood, front fascia, and grille featuring laser-etched knurling. The vehicle's body-on-frame architecture allowed for independent suspension and weight-saving materials like an aluminum hood and doors.

Inside, the Grand Wagoneer offered a more luxurious experience than the standard Wagoneer, with 24-way power front seats, Nappa leather upholstery, and optional Palermo leather. The interior featured aluminum and American Walnut wood trim, with seat controls placed high on the doors. The Grand Wagoneer also included a "Grand Wagoneer" inscription on the dashboard, ensuring occupants never forgot the vehicle's identity.

Performance

2021 Chrysler Pacifica

8/10

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

6/10

The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica offered two powertrain options: a 3.6-litre V6 engine producing 287 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, and a hybrid variant combining a V6 engine with a dual-motor electrically variable transmission, achieving 260 horsepower from the engine and 198 horsepower from its motors. The hybrid model boasted an all-electric range of over 50 kilometres and a total range of 784 kilometres, with fuel consumption rated at 2.9 litres-equivalent per 100 kilometres.

The Pacifica's AWD system, available for the first time in 16 years, activated on-demand based on various conditions, enhancing traction without compromising fuel efficiency. The traditional V6 Pacifica achieved 12.4 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 8.4 on the highway, while AWD models saw a slight increase in consumption.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer featured a 6.4-litre Hemi V8 engine, delivering 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain enabled the Grand Wagoneer to accelerate from zero to 100 kilometres per hour in approximately six seconds. The vehicle came standard with a Quadra-Drive II four-wheel-drive system, including a two-speed transfer case and electronic limited-slip differential, along with a height-adjustable Quadra-Lift air suspension system.

The Grand Wagoneer's off-road capabilities were impressive, with a maximum ground clearance of 25.4 centimetres and the ability to ford up to 60 centimetres of water. However, its size and weight made it less agile on the road, with a bouncy ride at higher speeds and imprecise steering.

Form and function

The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica was designed with family life in mind, offering spacious front seats and a padded centre console lid for a sense of togetherness. Storage options included an under-stack area and under-console storage for second-row passengers. Standard features included rear power-sliding doors, three-zone climate control, and Stow 'n Go seating, providing ample legroom and cargo space. The Pacifica boasted best-in-class total storage of 3,979 litres.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer accommodated seven or eight passengers, with more third-row headroom and second-row legroom than competitors like the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator. However, it offered less first-row space. The Grand Wagoneer provided 775 litres of cargo space with all seats in place and 2,007 litres with the third row stowed. Its maximum towing capacity was 4,472 kilograms, slightly less than the standard Wagoneer due to the Grand Wagoneer's additional weight.

The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica featured the Uconnect 5 infotainment system, offering a modern and customizable experience with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Optional second-row in-seat entertainment included games and various ports for personal entertainment. The Pinnacle model added FamCam, an interior monitoring camera with unique features like a rear-facing child seat view.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer boasted a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, dual touchscreens, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a McIntosh audio system. Second-row passengers had their own touchscreen, while an optional rear-seat entertainment system added additional screens. The Uconnect 5 system, with an Android-based operating system and OTA updates, powered the infotainment experience, though the screen response was occasionally slow.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer included standard safety features such as a 360-degree camera system, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. Optional features included intersection collision assist and night vision. Active Lane Management System combined adaptive cruise control with automated lane centring, with a hands-free version planned for future release.
