Midsize sedans without Honda or Toyota emblems are on life support, including the 2025 Nissan Altima.
Compared to midsize sedans, compact crossover SUVs offer more interior room, a taller driving position, easier entry and exit, and more models offer all-wheel drive (AWD). Their extra ground clearance helps you through snow or to scramble down a trail, too. They literally leave sedans in the dust, though they’re usually more expensive, get worse fuel economy, and handle less securely. Nevertheless, Nissan adds a 2025 Altima SR Premium trim to the Canadian lineup to drum up interest in its fading family car.
Verdict: Is the 2025 Nissan Altima a good car? It has terrific front seats, standard AWD in Canada, and a competitively priced trim walk. Otherwise, it simply doesn’t have what it takes to attract customers better served by other midsize cars.
Styling-wise, the 2025 Altima is appealing. There’s just enough flair to generate visual interest, but not so much that Nissan shrinks its customer base due to odd proportions or outlandish details.
The 2025 Altima lineup in Canada includes S, SR, SR Premium, and Platinum trim levels. Our test car had sporty SR trim, which includes 19-inch wheels and sport-bolstered front seats. Note the test unit’s Tactical Green paint colour and bronze wheels are not offered in Canada. The 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine continues to be the only option in Canada, though this is now also the case in the U.S. as Nissan has dropped the more powerful variable-compression turbocharged (VC-Turbo) engine option previously available south of the border.
Prices across the lineup range from $34,585 to $41,335, including a destination charge of $2,030 and other fees but not sales taxes. The test model carries a Canadian manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $37,485 fees in, before adding dealer accessories.
There was nothing special about our Altima’s interior. Since it wasn’t in SR Premium trim, it was missing leather seats, a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and other worthwhile features. (Note, however, that Canadian SR units do come with dual-zone climate control.)
The SR Premium trim will dress up the interior, but the low-grade plastic will remain. Also, various dashboard materials, surface glosses, panels, and cutlines mar the view forward enough to be distracting. And the test vehicle’s visible foam insulation where the base of the windshield met the dashboard just looked cheap and unfinished.
Nissan equips every 2025 Altima sold in Canada with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and standard AWD, generating 182 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque. A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) is standard as well.
The best word to use for the Altima’s driving experience is unremarkable. This car goes about its business without fanfare, neither exciting nor disappointing its driver. The engine provides decent acceleration, the CVT rarely irritates, and the Altima is quieter than expected. In addition, the brakes feel good underfoot, and the steering wheel is easy to twirl.
In SR trim, the suspension and 19-inch wheels produce a firm but not uncomfortable ride. If you’re inspired to take an Altima SR for a drive on a twisty road, you’ll find it offers balanced handling. However, the steering lacks precision and feel, requiring regular mid-curve course corrections. Also, it doesn’t take long to overheat the brakes, causing some fade. So, drive accordingly.
Unlike several of its rivals, the Altima doesn’t offer a hybrid powertrain option, so if maximum fuel economy is what you want, this Nissan isn’t the answer. At least it delivers real-world fuel efficiency that matches the official rating from Natural Resources Canada. The Altima AWD should burn 8.2 litres per 100 kilometres in S trim and 8.4 L/100 km in other trims in combined driving. Our test car averaged 8.3 L/100 km on our mountainous testing loop.
As a daily driver, the Altima is fine. If you’re looking for something sportier to drive that also gets better fuel economy, consider a Honda Accord Hybrid or a Toyota Camry SE/XSE. And remember, the Camry is also available with AWD, too.
One of the best things about the 2025 Nissan Altima is its comfortable interior. The front seats use the automaker’s Zero Gravity design, which Nissan claims is inspired by the weightlessness of space to reduce pressure on your body and fatigue on long drives.
Whatever the company has done works. The front seats are terrific, and while the front passenger’s seat lacks a height adjuster, it offers excellent leg support so you don’t feel like you’re sitting splay-legged on the car's floor. Also, the way the dashboard cascades down in front of the passenger makes the seat feel higher than it is. The back seat cushion isn’t quite as comfy, but it is supportive and roomy enough for adults to be happy for longer distances.
Note that while rear climate vents are not shown on our U.S. test unit, these are standard equipment on the 2025 Altima in Canada.
Interior storage space is commendable, and the 437-litre trunk offers plenty of practicality. You can lay suitcases flat or on their sides, and Nissan reports that you can expand the cargo volume to 1,645 litres by folding the 60/40-split rear seat down. Is that an effort to remind consumers that sedans offer similar utility to SUVs?
Nissan offers a choice between two infotainment systems in the 2025 Altima. The standard setup has an 8-inch touchscreen, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a six-speaker stereo. This version is standard on the S and SR trims in Canada. In SR, a wireless charging pad is added.
The Altima SR Premium and Platinum get a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with modern graphics and added features. Highlights include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, NissanConnect services, and a navigation system.
One reason we recommend jumping to the Altima SR Premium is that it includes a better infotainment system. Without it, you’ll need to live with the simple but unsatisfying basic tech our test car had. You’ll enjoy it more if you plug in a cable and run Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, but the glare on the display remains excessive.
The standard sound system is merely adequate. It has a Bass Enhancer, but we don’t recommend using it unless you prefer your music muddy. Nissan reserves the nine-speaker Bose replacement for the Altima SR Premium and Platinum trims.
Choosing the SR Premium trim level is also your ticket to the best safety features available for the Altima. They include ProPilot Assist 1.0, which pairs an adaptive cruise control system with stop-and-go capability and a lane-centring assist system. The Altima Platinum also has a surround-view camera system.
Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard on every Altima. It equips the car with: forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, automatic rear braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Our test car had these features, and they worked as advertised. However, the automatic rear braking system is too sensitive and makes it hard to park the Altima in close quarters.
Safety ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are favourable. The Altima earns a five-star overall rating, including a rare five-star rollover resistance rating.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), which conducts different tests with more stringent requirements than the NHTSA, is not as optimistic about the Altima’s crash protection. In recently updated evaluations related to side impact protection and front crash prevention, the Altima gets a Poor rating. The car’s performance in an updated moderate offset, frontal-impact test is Marginal.
At its base price, the 2025 Altima is the most affordable midsize car on the rapidly dwindling market. Its chief rivals left in Canada — the Hyundai Sonata, Honda Accord, and Toyota Camry — all have a higher starting price, and the Altima is the only one among them that offers standard AWD.
The more expensive sedans offer more, though. The Honda Accord is roomier, safer, more enjoyable to drive, and offers a hybrid upgrade. The Toyota Camry includes a standard hybrid powertrain, making it significantly more fuel efficient.
Nissan hasn’t redesigned the Altima since 2019, and it is rumoured to be getting the axe after the 2025 or 2026 model year. If Nissan replaces it, an electrified powertrain is necessary, and it needs to land on the IIHS Top Safety Pick list. Otherwise, Nissan should focus its resources on the Rogue compact SUV.
