The Nissan Rogue compact crossover gets tech and styling updates for the 2024 model year.
The Rogue is Nissan’s entry into a crowded compact crossover SUV segment that includes well-known models like the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Subaru Forester, and Toyota RAV4, to name a few. The 2024 Nissan Rogue debuts refreshed styling and gets a tech overhaul highlighted by Google built-in apps, marking their first appearance in a Nissan.
Verdict: New tech features may be the headline, but an impressive powertrain and interior are what really make the 2024 Nissan Rogue stand out.
This model year brings the first major styling update for the current-generation Rogue since its 2021-model-year launch. The lineup of trim levels in Canada encompasses S, SV Moonroof, SV Premium, SL, and Platinum models.
A new, larger grille blends nicely with the stack headlights and daytime running lights that are one of the Rogue’s most distinctive features. Nissan claims the rear fascia is new as well, but the only real difference is redesigned inner taillight elements. Satin-finish exterior badging, a new 18-inch wheel design for the Rogue SV grade (base Rogue S models get 17-inch wheels), and new 19-inch wheel design for the Rogue Platinum with a machined-finish look, round out the changes. The top Platinum grade also gets more black exterior trim, as well as an optional black roof.
Nissan also made some changes to the dashboard, mostly to accommodate a new 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen. The freestanding screen and the rest of the dash give the Rogue a more premium feel than some of its competitors. Nice-looking trim helps as well. For 2024, Rogue SV models get new materials on nearly every surface of the interior, including the door panels, seats, centre console, and dashboard. In Canada, all models also get dual-zone automatic climate control.
The upscale interior design helped our Rogue Platinum test car feel worthy of its billing as the highest Rogue trim level. Platinum models get leather seats, with a new Chestnut brown colour available for 2024, and quilted stitching. Unlike some competitors, the Rogue’s leather upholstery wasn’t rubbery, taxi-grade stuff. And it didn’t feel out of place in what was an overall nicely appointed cabin for a vehicle in this segment.
The 2024 Nissan Rogue’s powertrain is a true engineering curiosity. The 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine has one less cylinder than the competition, but makes up for it with a neat trick. It’s one of Nissan’s VC-Turbo engines, meaning it can vary its compression ratio to emphasize power or fuel economy depending on the situation.
The Rogue’s engine truly punches above its weight. At 201 horsepower and 225 pound-feet of torque, it’s more powerful than the 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that comes standard in the Honda CR-V and the Subaru Forester’s naturally aspirated 2.5-litre boxer-four. The Toyota RAV4’s 2.5-litre inline-four engine has slightly more horsepower (203 hp) but much less torque (184 lb-ft). The VC-Turbo triple also outmuscles the non-hybrid powertrains available in the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage.
It's too bad the rest of the Rogue isn’t as impressive as its engine. The standard continuously variable transmission (CVT) didn’t do anything to dispel stereotypes about these transmissions. Even when the engine seemed eager to produce thrust, the CVT was slow to transfer it to the wheels. Like most other small crossovers, the Rogue comes standard all-wheel drive (AWD) in Canada.
Nissan doesn’t bill the Rogue as a driver’s car like Mazda does with its CX-5, but the Rogue also fell short as a daily driver. The suspension in our Rogue Platinum test car felt a lot firmer than the segment norm, degrading ride quality with no obvious benefit to handling. The Rogue wasn’t any more eager to take a corner than more softly sprung rivals like the Subaru Forester. It was quiet, at least, which was definitely a good thing. While we were impressed by the engine’s performance, we weren’t impressed by its droning exhaust note.
In a testament to the competitiveness of the compact crossover segment, The Rogue and rivals like the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Subaru Forester, and Toyota RAV4 offer nearly identical passenger space across both rows of seats. The main differences are in legroom. The Forester offers a bit more first-row legroom, while the Tucson has appreciably more second-row legroom.
When it comes to cargo space, the Rogue’s maximum 1,033 litres with the rear seats in place (or 1,028 with the moonroof) and 2,098 litres with the rear seats folded (or 2,064 litres with the moonroof) mean this offers less space than a CR-V or Tucson, but more than a Forester.
Nissan also offers some features to help make the most of the available space. The optional Divide-N-Hide system lets drivers choose between a flat cargo floor with hidden storage underneath, or a lower floor that increases the height of the cargo area (it’s in the latter configuration that the Rogue achieves its maximum cargo space behind the second row). The cargo area also has a molded-in space on the inner right rear side for holding grocery bags. And like most vehicles in this segment, the Rogue is available with a power liftgate (on SV models), as well as a motion activated liftgate (on SL and Platinum models).
Up front, the centre console has a pass-through space for added flexibility. The tall console also leaves room for a storage tray at floor level, but reaching it is a bit awkward and it seemed like items placed there would be easily forgotten.
Lower-level Nissan Rogue S and SV models come standard with an 8-inch touchscreen and wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. New for 2024, Rogue SL and Platinum models get a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen (replacing the previous 9-inch screen) with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster (previously available only on the Platinum, but now standard on the SL as well), Amazon Alexa connectivity, and Google built-in apps.
The Rogue is the first Nissan to get Google built-in software, and at press time was the only vehicle in its segment to offer this feature. Google built-in has been available on other models from General Motors, Polestar, and Volvo for some time, though. It integrates Google Maps, Google Assistant voice control, and the Google Play app store directly with a vehicle’s infotainment system so drivers can use these features without connecting a smartphone. In Nissan’s case, though, connectivity is only provided free for five years, and owners who download third-party apps through the Play store will need to purchase a vehicle data plan straight away.
The benefit of this is supposed to be better performance from having apps running directly through the car rather than via a connected smartphone, as well as more streamlined connectivity for Google users. If you’re a regular Google Maps user, for example, you can transfer recent searches from another device to the car by staying signed in with your account. That’s not very relevant if you prefer Apple Maps, though.
Google built-in isn’t enough of a reason on its own to buy a Rogue, but it certainly doesn’t detract from this small SUV’s infotainment system. The dual 12.3-inch screen setup is a big improvement over other Nissan systems, sporting graphics that actually looked of this century and easy-to-navigate menus. The touchscreen in our Rogue Platinum test car was a bit slow to boot up on several occasions, but that might have been down to the fact that this was a pre-production vehicle.
Nissan also includes plenty of places to plug in and charge phones. Two USB-C ports are standard on the base Rogue S. SV and higher trim levels add two charge-only USB-C ports on the rear of the centre console, while SL and Platinum models also get a standard wireless device charging pad.
For 2024, Nissan is also extending the free trial period for its Nissan Connect Services from the previous six months to three years. Available on all but the Nissan Rogue S base model, this enables connectivity with a smartphone app that enables features like remote door lock/unlock, remote engine start/stop, vehicle health reports, and emergency calling.
The 2024 Rogue received decent safety scores from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It received top “Good” ratings in the small-overlap front crash test (both driver and passenger-side), the original-format moderate-overlap front test, and the original side-impact test. It also received an “Acceptable” rating in the updated side-impact test, and a “Good” headlight rating.
The 2024 Rogue also received a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), with five stars in side crash tests and four stars in rollover and frontal crash tests.
Standard driver assist features include automatic emergency braking (with pedestrian detection), blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, and rear automatic emergency braking. Adaptive cruise control is available on higher trim levels.
Also optional is ProPilot Assist, Nissan’s advanced driver assistance system. It builds on adaptive cruise control, adding automated lane centring for highway driving. Drivers still have to keep hands on the wheel and eyes ahead, however. The basic version of ProPilot Assist is standard on the Rogue SV trim level, while the SL and Platinum trims get a more advanced version that can use the navigation system to help proactively slow for curves and interchanges. Even this version is not very advanced as current driver-assist tech goes, but it’s still more capable than the systems offered by most rivals.
Natural Resources Canada rates the 2024 Nissan Rogue S and SV trims at 8.4 litres per 100 kilometres in city driving, 6.7 on the highway, and 7.6 combined. With the SL and Platinum trims, the figures remain similar at 8.4/6.8/7.7 L/100 km combined. This remains the segment’s best fuel consumption average with a gas-only powertrain.
Also unlikely to change is Nissan’s warranty coverage. The automaker offers a three-year, 60,000-kilometre, basic warranty and five-year, 100,000-kilometre powertrain warranty that are about average for the Rogue’s competitive set.
Pricing starts at $36,435 for a base Rogue S model, including a mandatory $2,030 destination charge and other fees. That’s roughly $1,200 more than the 2023-model-year base with AWD, which came with the now-dropped 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine. The SV Moonroof, SV Premium, SL, and Platinum trim levels start at $40,185, $42,335, $45,485, and $47,785 respectively.
This pricing structure roughly parallels the rival Toyota RAV4 and Hyundai Tucson. The Honda CR-V starts roughly $1,000 higher with fewer features, while the Subaru Forester has a lower base price. Still, the Rogue is a solid compact SUV that deserves consideration—especially if you’re a devoted Google user.
