It’s tough for a vehicle to be all things to all people. One person might need to take the kids to school, while the other needs to haul gardening supplies and the next is a weekend warrior with toys to tow up to the lake. If you’re the person who needs to do all three, you’re going to need a pickup truck. You could do much, much worse than the Ford F-150.
For 2024, this full-size truck under Canada’s best-selling nameplate gets a few tweaks both inside and out. The performance upgrades are most noticeable on the off-road-specific models, Tremor and Raptor R, but Ford’s hands-free driving assist Blue Cruise gets an update as well.
Verdict: The 2024 Ford F-150 gets even better with a few thoughtful improvements like a multi-functional tailgate, standard 12-inch touchscreen, and more available interior technology. Blue Cruise is also updated, making the F-150 the truck to beat in the segment.
The F-150 is available in seemingly endless configurations and trim levels. You have your choice of eight different trims and options of a regular two-door cab, a SuperCrew four-door cab, or a smaller four-door Super Cab. There are three different bed lengths, your choice of four-wheel or two-wheel drive (4WD or 2WD), and six different engine options. While the base XL model is pretty spartan, the King Ranch is downright luxurious, with heated and ventilated front leather seats, heated rear seats, wood trim, and ambient lighting. However, mid trims get a bit too many cheap-looking surfaces than we think are acceptable, and some of the touchpoints feel hard and plastic.
Regardless of trim, we like that the chunky buttons and knobs remain for 2024. They are easy to use, even with gloves on, and with physical controls for the HVAC system and stereo, there is no need to mess about on the infotainment screen for these most-used functions. One thoughtful touch is a shifter that folds down for a flat work space. It’s obvious Ford knows its customers here.
Outside, the front fascia of higher trims like the Lariat and Platinum models have gotten a tweak or two, but it would take a keen eye to spot the differences from last year’s styling. There are a few new wheel options as well, from blacked out and mysterious to bright and blingy chrome. The Tremor’s changes are a bit more noticeable thanks to orange accents on the new grille and unique running boards.
Ford has also added a series of earth tones, dubbed "Truffle." for the interior of certain models. You can get Medium Dark Smoked Truffle seats on the XLT and Lariat or a Smoked Truffle interior with Dark Smoked Truffle accents on the Platinum Plus trim.
While a turbocharged 2.7-litre EcoBoost V6 is the standard engine, our money is on the PowerBoost Hybrid. Available on the XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum trims, this 3.5-litre turbo V6 hybrid goes big with 430 horsepower and 570 pound-feet of torque. If you’re looking for a diesel powerplant, you won’t find it in an F-150. Currently only the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado offer an oil burner in a full-size pickup truck.
Regardless of engine choice, the 10-speed automatic transmission does its job in the background, always in the right gear and eager to downshift if the driver demands it. An unladen F-150 driving around town can feel a bit wobbly and skittish, but that’s par for the course when it comes to most full-size trucks. Add some weight to the bed, and it settles down nicely.
During our test drive, however, we spent most of our time in the Tremor and Raptor R variants. The Tremor comes standard with a 5.0-litre V8 with 400 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque. You can’t get the hybrid in this trim, but you can opt for a non-electrified V6 if you desire. This truck gets 33-inch tires and a 2.5-centimetre (1-inch) lift over the standard F-150, as well as off-road-tuned shocks and springs with beefy control arms and an electronic locking rear differential. Our off-road jaunt wasn’t particularly challenging, and the truck easily did everything that was asked of it, from climbing sandy hills to executing tight turns with the Trail Turn Assist feature. It even kept its composure down a steep decline with the Trail Control technology keeping a slow and steady speed.
However, folks who want to turn the specs up to 11 should check out the Raptor R. Under the hood here is a 5.2-litre supercharged V8, now with 720 horsepower and 640 pound-feet of twist getting down to the ground through massive 37-inch tires. This is not a truck for the faint of heart, and you would be well-served by getting a few lessons before you take this beast out to the desert.
The 3.1-inch Fox Live Valve shocks have always had variable compression control, but Ford added variable rebound control for 2024 to keep the truck from bucking in high-speed desert running. Suspension travel here is 33 cm (13 inches) in the rear, 35 cm (14 inches) in the front.
Essentially, this means you can go faster through rough terrain than most people have the guts to manage. Put the truck in Baja mode, and triple digits come up quicker than expected; even in undulations, 100 or 110 kilometres per hour is achievable. We hit a jump at 120 km/h and the Raptor R handled it like a champ. Drivers have to commit to that speed and push through their fear, but it’s doable.
The F-150 has always been great at the “truck stuff,” and it isn’t poised to give up the crown any time soon. New this year is the available Pro Access tailgate that can flip down like a traditional gate but also features a 20/60/20 split with a swing gate for easier access to the bed. The door can stop automatically at an opening of 37 degrees to avoid hitting the trailer jack, as well as 70 or 100 degrees for super-easy loading and unloading. There is a rear bumper step, and new lockable bed storage boxes as well.
Ford also gives buyers the ability to power accessories and tools with Pro Power Assist. Gas-powered trucks can get a 2.0-kW onboard generator, but trucks with the PowerBoost hybrid can produce 2.4 kW of power for 85 hours on a full tank of gas. Those who need to power things like welders or other high-draw tools can opt for the 7.2-kW system, which can run for 32 hours.
Towing and hauling numbers here are best in class, but remember, not all configurations can achieve them. The maximum towing capacity of 6,123 kilograms (13,500 pounds) is only achievable in an F-150 with the EcoBoost V6 engine, the 6.5-foot bed, 4WD, and the SuperCrew cab. Payload is rated for a maximum of 1,018 kilograms (2,445 pounds); that's for the same engine, but with the 8-foot bed, 2WD, and the regular cab.
Our favourite hybrid engine gets a maximum towing rating of 5,080 kilograms (11,200 pounds) and 796 kilograms (1,755 pounds) of payload. Still, not too shabby! Unfortunately, the Raptor R can only tow 3,946 kilograms (8,700 pounds) and haul 635 kilograms (1,400 pounds). That’s what happens when you prioritize a softer off-road suspension setup.
For 2024, all Ford F-150 trucks come with a 12-inch touchscreen running SYNC 4. We like this system for its quick learning curve and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The voice recognition works great. Satellite radio is here standard, as are a 5G LTE wireless hotspot and wireless charging. All models also come with a 12-inch reconfigurable digital gauge cluster.
New to the F-150 is an available head-up display with options to display information relating to towing and hauling, off-roading, or driving assistance. It’s great to have all that information right in your peripheral vision, and it’s visible through polarized sunglasses, albeit with the brightness turned up to full blast.
Customers in 2024 will be able to option their F-150 with Ford Stolen Vehicle Services. This feature can detect when the truck is tampered with and alert the owner through the FordPass app. The owner can then report the truck stolen, and authorities can use the truck’s location data to recover the vehicle.
Although the F-150 doesn’t offer as many camera views to help with towing as the Chevrolet Silverado does, it can back itself up to the trailer coupler automatically. Towing newbies will also appreciate the Pro Trailer Backup Assist that takes the stress out of reversing a trailer. Simply turn the dial on the dash in the direction you want the trailer to go and voila—no more turning the steering wheel right to make the trailer go left. The Smart Hitch tech measures tongue weight to ensure a safe hook-up, and there is even an Onboard Scale that can display total payload weight.
Every 2024 F-150 comes with the Ford CoPilot 360 suite of advanced driver’s aids. This includes things like automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and cross traffic alert. We recommend moving up the trim line a bit to get a 360-degree camera. The F-150 is a big truck, and having the extra set of eyes is worth it. You can also add an Exit Warning so you don’t accidentally open your door and ruin the day of a passing motorist or cyclist.
While adaptive cruise control isn’t standard, you can get the hands-free/eyes-up subscription-based Blue Cruise driving-assist system on Tremor and up trims. New for this year are lane-change assist and lane-repositioning. The lane-change assist is engaged when the driver signals, but it is pretty timid in moving over, waiting until the neighbouring lane is absolutely clear before proceeding. Should another car dip in behind during your lane change, the technology quickly scoots the truck back into its original lane. The lane-repositioning feature is supposed to bias the truck to the far side of the lane when a larger vehicle is next to it. It never felt like the F-150 was dangerously close to any semi-trucks on the highway, but it also never felt like the truck was repositioning itself.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) gave the 2024 Ford F-150 an overall safety rating of five stars for all cab configurations and also awarded it five-star side-crash and frontal-crash ratings. In rollovers, the F-150 rated four out of five stars in all cab configurations. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2024 F-150 SuperCrew the top score of “Good” in driver- and passenger-side crashworthiness. Current testing for front crashes received a “Poor” rating for possible injuries to rear-seat passengers. However, side crashes merited a rating of “Good.” Seatbelt reminders for the 2024 F-150 received an overall rating of “Poor,” while child seat anchors received an overall rating of “Marginal.”
Just as there are myriad configurations and options for the 2024 Ford F-150, so there are myriad prices. Ford says it has reduced ordering complexity by 90 percent, but there are still so many options. A 2WD base XL with a regular cab and a 6.5-foot bed starts at an MSRP of $50,700 including delivery fees of $2,495 and a discount being applied as of this writing, but you’ll spend more than $160,000 on a Raptor R… and that’s not including the inevitable dealer markups.
We think the sweet spot is in the XLT SuperCrew with the optional hybrid engine, but it still gets spendy. For 2024, the price of the hybrid powerplant has been reduced so that it’s the same cost as the standard 3.5-litre V6, but you’ll find that the options add up quickly, and it’s easy to land in the mid-$80,000 range. However, for that price, you get Natural Resources Canada-rated fuel economy of 11.4 litres per 100 kilometres in the city, 10.1 on the highway, and 10.8 combined, plus nice features like a surround-view camera, Pro Trailer BackUp and Hitch Assist, heated seats, and three years of Blue Cruise.
That is about the same price as the Toyota Tundra iForce Max, the only other full-size hybrid truck on the market. However, the Tundra doesn’t come with any of the fancy towing toys, nor is it available with technology equivalent to Blue Cruise. Its fuel economy is worse, too.
Just for fun, we went to the configurator to build a Raptor R and got it past $170,000 by selecting options like a moonroof, tonneau cover, orange beadlock beauty rings, and a fancy red paint job. All that and 19.7 L/100 km combined! You may luck out and find a 2024 Ram TRX at a dealership, but the company has stopped making them, and quantities are limited. Still, it’s a way to get V8 power and save $50,000 or so.
All 2024 F-150 models come standard with a three-year/60,000-kilometre Ford factory warranty and a five-year/100,000-kilometre powertrain warranty. This is a standard warranty for the class.
The truck world is incredibly competitive, with manufacturers constantly trying to one-up each other with utility and options. Not only has Ford nailed it with best-in-class towing and hauling, it also offers innovative powertrains and features with the ability to off-load juice to power campsites or worksites. Nothing else in the class even comes close.
