The Honda Odyssey excels among minivans with a versatile, high-quality interior and a refined ride.
Though the minivan segment was pioneered by Chrysler, the Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey fine-tuned the concept. The Honda Odyssey, in particular, has raised the bar for the minivan in many new ways. The 2008 Honda Odyssey is both comfortable and extremely versatile, and it offers safety and reliability—top priorities for families.
The Odyssey has been sold in North America since 1994. In 2005, it was completely redesigned, and it enters 2008 with a mild facelift.
Style updates to the Odyssey are modest and include a new grille, new bumper, and new headlight design. Inside, the dash updates are more noticeable. The small, cluttered button assemblies have been replaced with larger, easy-to-operate dials. The cabin has fantastic fit and finish, and on the top-level trims, the Odyssey has a near-luxury feel.
In Canada, Honda offers the Odyssey in DX, LX, EX, EX-L, and EX-L Touring Trims. Standard features on the Canada-exclusive DX include 16-inch steel wheels, heated mirrors, intermittent front and rear wipers, power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, front and rear air conditioning, a CD player, cruise control, in-floor storage, and a 60-40 split third-row seat. On LX, body-coloured side mouldings, tinted glass, roof rails, a conversation mirror, and a second-row Plus-One seat with storage are added. Moving up to the EX adds alloy wheels, tri-zone climate control, second-row sunshades, power-sliding doors, an eight-way power driver’s seat, and a six-disc CD changer.
The EX-L adds leather seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a power-adjustable front passenger seat, a power sunroof/moonroof, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and heated front seats. The Touring adds 17-inch alloy wheels, an upgraded stereo, navigation, memory seat, front and rear parking sensors, power-adjustable pedals, and 17 cup holders.
No matter the trim, Honda provides the Odyssey with a 3.5-litre V6 engine. On EX-L and Touring, it features Variable Cylinder Management (VCM), which can shut down three cylinders when full power is not required. This V6 sends power specs of 241 horsepower and 242 pound-feet of torque to front-wheel drive (FWD) through a five-speed automatic transmission. The clever dash-mounted shifter placement is easy to locate and frees up space.
This drivetrain provides strong acceleration and feels quicker than other minivans. When you're not punching it, the VCM system is imperceptible and helps conserve fuel.
The Odyssey is built on a platform that is shared with the Honda Accord. This is relevant in that it provides the minivan with a car-like ride. Handling is composed in most scenarios, and ride quality is smooth, both around town and at highway speeds. There’s no escaping the weight of a minivan, and some bumps and potholes will simply be too much for the suspension to smooth out. The Touring trim has a slightly stiffer suspension.
The 2008 Honda Odyssey comes standard with dual-stage front airbags, side-curtain airbags, and side-impact airbags. Other standard safety features include traction control, electronic stability control, rollover sensor, tire pressure monitoring, active front seat head restraints, and antilock brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution.
The Odyssey is available with a backup camera. The Touring trim adds front and rear park assist, as well as automatic headlights.
The 2008 Honda Odyssey returns fuel economy of 13.3 litres per 100 kilometres in city driving and 8.5 on the highway without variable cylinder management, and 12.4 L/100 km city, 7.8 highway when VCM is equipped.
Base new car MSRP for the 2008 Honda Odyssey is $31,490 for a DX trim. The LX starts at $33,590, while EX starts at $36,990 and the Honda Odyssey EX-L starts at $40,590. The Touring trim starts at $48,890. Sticking with the lower trims provides the best value: The quality and comfort of the Honda Odyssey Touring trim are undeniable, but that price also makes it one of the most expensive minivan configurations on the market.
