I like taking turns with the car, it was fun to drive. Brakes are good, is good in the snow. Helped my wallet with the gas mileage. I liked the brand and think they make good cars and this one had a quality build, I felt safe.Oct 09, 2014

Overall great compact car, pleasure to drive. My wife used it for a daily commute to work and really enjoyed it. Easy drive, great gas mileage and a German quality built to last for years and years. Very comfortable ride, easy to park anywhere and a great turning radius, a must when driving and parking in downtown.Aug 16, 2013

There was nothing I did not like about the car except I wanted one more gear in the transmission. Oh, and we outgrew it. it is tight for a family of 4. no problem at all for 3. I will miss it.May 18, 2013

interior quality is on high level, i like recaro seats on it, it s fun to drive in it on high speed, didnt need any repairs, good acceleration, good handling, inteior is very nice, nice black black colour, rims are from golf r 32, price is more than goodAug 17, 2012

It looks absolutly amazing, as it is german every line is perfect in the build quality, and the performance, well, as it's a TDI (Turbo Diesl Injection) it's pretty bad, and it's getting to old, and to many miles, (121,983). so.Sep 07, 2010

The most classy Golf ever! The newer Mk V and VI models are for sure good cars, however, they don't appeal to me nearly as much as the Mk IV. This was my first car ever, and was a very pleasant car to own. I actually miss it quite a bit, it would make a sweet "No. 2-car" next to my Volvo V70... ;-)Jan 22, 2010

1st its not GLS 1.8T since its from Europien market and not American so its a Coupe GTI wd 1.8l 20v turbo engine,150 brake horsepower,Silver in color,16"sport rims ÖEM".Recaro seat front and rear,very special sound system(my own job),fantastic brake system.A VERY WOW CAR TO ONE TO OWN.Jan 06, 2010

The 1.8t was a fairly quick car in 150bhp form - although this power could be easily re-mapped to over 200bhp for around £300.00. Braking was amazing, but handling in general could have been more sports orientated, however - it was such a good all rounder and a totally capable motorway cruiser. Earlier examples had Recaro interiors which are a really nice touch, there are certain common weak areas of the car such as coilpacks/window regulators, but nothing you cannot sort out with a bit of DIY. Sold mine with over 100k miles and it was still driving like a new car. regularly got over 35mpgJul 19, 2009

The turbo ensures good acceleration and sounds cool. The handling is good. The best things are the ride quality and build quality, good german engineering. I like the apperance too nice interior. The fuel consumption is average, 35 mpg ish.Jun 19, 2009

Thanks to my autophile father I was pretty much born with petrol coarsing through my veins and grew up lusting after italian exotica and french ingenuity. So when it came to fulfilling my motoring destiny by parting with the hard earned, I fully expected to return home with a sonorous and stylish Alfa or a quirky old Citroen. How then did I become the owner of a Volkswagen Golf? And not even the iconic mk1, desirable mk2 or rejuvenated mk5, nope the stodgy if solid mk4. The actual reasons for this decision are somewhat dull and practical and as it happens I'm planning to swap it for aforementioned alfa in the next few months. But saying goodbye to the Golf won't be as easy as you may think. It may be staid, evolutionary and a little bit dull, but even to a petrolhead like me there has been a guilty pleasure about owning this car. Mine is a 1.8T GTI which helps the case enormously. The engine must be the pick of the mk4 bunch; it is silken smooth and pulls like a train, with lovely turbo torque from 2000rpm and some good old fashioned top end go as the 20 valves come on song around 4000rpm. The GTI also has significantly firmer springing and weightier steering than your boggo 1.6. Neither of these is going to mask the inherent shortcomings of the mk4 chassis, and on your favourite piece of twisty road it feels safe and competent rather than fun and involving. But in 90% of real world driving this is irrelevant. What is relevent, is where you are sitting and what you've got and here the Golf excels. It is beautifully built (far nicer than the mk5) and in GTI trim very well equipped - my favourite feature being the superb recaro seats which are comfortable and supportive. And then there's all the other stuff about owning a Golf, like good reliability and strong resale values which shouldn't get you excited but when it's your own money does. So there you go, i've said it, I'm glad to own a mk4 Golf and frankly would recommend it to anyone. Now where did I put that Alfa brochure.... Nov 20, 2008

only problem seems to be the oxygen sensors. other than that love it. performance is not the best but it has plenty of toys. was a little expensive but worth the few extra pounds. i would like to buy the higher powered model as my next motor. recommend to anyoneNov 19, 2008

makes me feel secure. Great acceleration No major problem apart from the Turbo that needed to be replaced after 6 years... Fun to drive, my wife like it so much she wants it after I upgrade with the new VW Golf wagon with clean diesel engine probably the family one. Thanks Nov 13, 2008

51 plate Golf GT TDI - the quick economic diesil monster. Wheel in 4 corners means this car drives like a dream, acceleration pushes you back in the seat and you can chuck this baby about without worrying if you'll end up in a field. My girlfriend has this car and I must say that it is much more enjoyable than I thought it would be. I think it has some cool factor just for being a diesel and it is pretty peppy. They did have an issue with the intake manifold becoming restricted which made the car seem like it had transmission issues but the problem was easily resolved. Jul 19, 2008

Despite the electrical misfits of this VW year (2001) model, I love my car and will drive it to the ground! I would buy another VW, as this is my second one already. Everything a Golf should be: great building quality, good looks, good handling. I actually like it more than its successor. The quality of this model is better. The sports seats give a great feel to every ride. The auto gearbox is obsolete and too slow to keep up a sporty pace. Materials are well sought out and the overall quality impression is good. The engine is pretty agile and has a low MPG return. Thanks to the 134bhp power supply, a sporty drive never is far away. The breaks should be better, though. They don't give me the direct response I'd expect.Mar 26, 2008

This car is seriously one of my favorite cars ever. For a little 2.0L it has a lot of juice. I drove it through a huge puddle and broke some sensor. Ended up costing like 200 bucks. Great car!Mar 24, 2008

I owned a 1.9 TDI S (90bhp) for almost 4 years - the longest I have ever owned a car. This in itself says something about how much I liked the car. It was well equipped and nothing ever stopped working. The fuel economy was pretty good and the engine pulled strongly too. My only real issues wih the car focus on the way it handles. Compared with the Mk II I owned prior to this it was particularly poor. It leaned too much and never felt very sporty in the corners. The interior was very good though, with nice use of materials and plenty of comfort. Decent, but if you can afford it buy a Mk V instead - much better in every way, apart from build quality.Mar 21, 2008

Great to drive. Heated seats only cost $250 extra, well worth the money spent for WI winters. The mirrors were also heated on this package. 8 air bags standard! However limited room for legs in the back if you were an adult. Ok for the kids.Mar 15, 2008

I owned this car for more than three years and it put a smile on my face everytime I planted my foot on the accelerator. This car has it all acceleration, handling, comfort, reliability and its practical. Only problem was the 25MPG.Feb 04, 2008

This car is a blast to drive. Its pure farfanugen. The turbo is a lot of fun to wind up and let go. Also, I have moved between 3 apartments with this car and the only thing it couldn't handle were my bed and my sofa. Its basically the same car as my dad's Audi A4. Same engine, better sound system, but the golf dosen't have 4 wheel drive or independent rear suspension. The brakes are a little different too.Dec 03, 2007

This is the best car I've ever own. The TDI engine is the most fuel efficient motor you can get. Its fuel consumption is really close to the Prius and other hybrid but yet, the TDI is more powerful and I really like the handling of the Golf too.Aug 27, 2007
