Experts agree, this is arguably the most beautiful modern era BMW ever made. HOWEVER , the sunroof drains can, and will, leak. The water will then run down behind the dashboard on the passenger side and soak /burn up the FUSE BOX that some genius BMW engineer mounted on the floor, under the carpeting. The timing chain guides are plastic. The engine oil interacts with the guides and makes them brittle. Mileage doesn’t matter, time does. After 20+ years, the guides will break. The timing chain jumps a tooth and a piston slams into a valve and PRESTO- you just turned your engine into a boat anchor. Guide replacement will run around $4k from an Indy BMW mechanic. Oh, and while the mechanic has the whole front end pulled apart, have him replace the coolant pipe o-rings. Again, the genius’s at BMW ran a coolant pipe THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF THE ENGINE. If the gasket fails you’ll get coolant in your oil and then the fun begins all over. Also, these cars are very heavy, with an extreme forward rake and short front suspension. Be prepared to replace control arm bushings on a regular basis. Now the interior. The final resistor for the A/C fan is BEHIND and IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DASHBOARD. Repllacing it requires you to remove the ENTIRE dashboard. Once the dashboard is out, it’s literally a one minute job to replace the final resistor. Then you can reinstall all 50 of the screws and fasteners that hold the dashboard together. I could go on and on, but I’d be here for days. In all fairness, BMW are not made to be easy or inexpensive to maintain. BMW’s are made for rich folks to drive the crap out of them for 4 years then trade them in before they start breaking down. That’s the reason resale prices on BMW’s are so low and there’s a ton of them on the market. But hey, they’re pretty to look at. I’ve owned 8 BMWs. My E38 was by far the most beautiful, but also the most expensive to maintain. Nov 23, 2023

Based on my own research, the 1999-2001 BMW 740 series is the most reliable, comfortable and lowest maintenance of any BMW made. True driving performance!Aug 14, 2023
