1999 Subaru Impreza Reviews, Pricing & Specs

My first car. Plenty of torque in the lower range, but lacks power after 3rd gear. The AWD helps more than anything else. It provides outstanding grip no matter what surface you are on so long as you know how to compensate for the difference in control. i have upgraded the suspension and most bolt ons for my Subie and it is loved by most who drive it even if they have high horsepowered cars. I have owned it for 6.5 years and have only needed to replace the tranny and clutch due to previous owner, and have totaled it in late 2008 when i hit a deer. It is still driving strong and I plan on rebuilding the engine soon with new internal upgrades.May 19, 2010

well my subaru impreza wrx sti typr R v6 is by far the best car i have eva driven due to it emence power output ad its race car handeling. as for looks i think the classic GC8 shape is a far better looking than its younger brothers in every single way. what more can i say about the car other than ir rocks my world, cant wait to have her running again!!!Jan 05, 2010

Performance - acceleration is average, brakes pull you up pretty fast, handles really good around corners at speeds above recommened. Build quality - average, since i've had the car i have needed to replace the clutch, drivers front CV joint and a few squeaks here and there. Appearance - sexy curves in my opinion, intrerior is pretty average. Fun factor - is fun to messa round in. was surprised when the all wheel drive drifted around a wet corner. Nov 01, 2009

Pros: fun to drive, stable in turns, great acceleration, doesn't requires frequent maintenance , good air conditioner, fuel efficient, solid breaks reaction (on emergency situations). tons of storage space. Cons: "not the most gorgeous girl in the city", brakes mechanism acts weird and needs some getting used to, the seats are too low so you drive in some sort of lying position, noisy engine, the interior feels like its made out of cheap materials to sum it up: The 1999 Subaru Impreza is a great car for young drivers who cant afford a new car. if you considering it, don't let the 1999 tag scare you. this car is really reliable. the maintenance is minimal. nevertheless, you can still feel the chemistry between you and the car. highly recommended by me! total score in ARIscale : 7/10Jun 24, 2009

Uhm right. Well the performance is awesome but it could do way better, which is what I'm working on. The car is beautiful both inside and out. Metal blue paint and with a black stripe over the hood and black roof. It doesn't cost much to run, which is great compared to the horse count. And it's spectacular to drive, best car I've driven so far. And probably will stay that way for awhile. Could probably write way more, but don't really have the time atm... Jan 03, 2009

SubaruS are built like tanks.it's got a bulletproof engine which I have put 80k on and its never broken down or failed an MOT in 7 years that I've owned it . I'm not the most careful of owners and don't exactly drive slowly but it takes all the punishment I can give it. I have bought other cars since I purchased the Subaru but can never bare to sell the damn thing!Aug 31, 2008

Daily driver for myself,import wrx wagon standard power rated at approx 240 bhp,upgraded the brakes,turbo,intercooler,exhaust,engine maegment system to an apexi pfc,remapped to approx 320 bhp..... totally unfussed when driving,secure handling with awd,very rapid performance,boxer engine has a nice note to it when uncorked,build quality is as you expect from the japanese nothing has fallen off or broken at all.Aug 22, 2008

This is a fun little car! Acceleration is a bit sluggish since it weighs a ton, due to the 4WD, but once you're up and going this little devil can do anything! The brakes are great! And the handling is awesome! Performs best in the dirt I might add! There is alot of road noise, but the build quality is decent. It's not a Toyota, but then again it's the next best thing! Styling is very good for an older car, and doesn't look outdated at all! Also this car is invaluable for those long camping trips and the quick trip to the lake!Aug 18, 2008

The number of different variants of Subaru Impreza is mind numbing, and everyone will tell you their version is better than all the others, and depending on what you want then they're all right. The Impreza is a legend, desired by many, despised by the rest. To see it is to mock its plastic stick on bits, to hear it is to complain about the noise.....to drive it is to realise what you've been missing out on. The true Impreza fan has, like me, watched it from the side of the forest tracks as McRae, Sainz, Burns, Kankunen and Solberg sprayed them with mud and as such the "classic" shape is where we look when we want to buy one. It's getting on a bit now, and as such finding a good one is getting increasingly difficult. Because of this it suddenly becomes very easy to refine which model to look for. The 22B still commands mega-bucks, but was never designed for British roads. Rarity gives it desirability but it's not the sensible choice. The P1, the most extreme of the genuine British cars is the object of desire for many...until you look a little closer. Tuned to within an inch of it's life, at nearly 9 years old there are very few now that haven't had an engine rebuild. And that's the thing with Scoobies...they're bullet proof reliable, right up until you start playing with the power output. Why? Even a standard Turbo 2000 will leave a Porsche 911 on your average Welsh B-road. The model that demands the smart money is the RB5. Obscenely quick, but still relatively standard so if treated with respect should still be going very strong. All finished in grey they are also the most understated. So what's the big deal about them? The performance everyone knows about. Off the line in any conditions, sun, rain or thick snow, the permanant 4WD will launch you towards the horizon. Modern hot hatches such as the Focus ST and the Astra VXR pack more power....but all through the front wheels. They simply can't use their power as effectively as the Impreza, and we've not even touched on the cornering ability. You have to have overdosed on stupid pills to mess up a sweeping bend in a Scooby. They inspire confidence, reward enthusiasm. And yet, it does all of this while carrying four passengers and a huge boot full of luggage. It'll burble along at 30mph without straining at the leash, a model of practicality. And then the road opens up before you and the turbo girds it's loins and suddenly you're elsewhere. I've driven and owned some truly godawful cars in my life, had the priviledge of racing many wonderful cars, yet there is no car that I am ever realistically likely to own that gives such an experience. Owning one is a great responsibilty as every Saxo, Corsa or even rep-mobile will ride your backside wanting you to race. You never ever have to though, as you know you're driving the car that gave both Colin McRae and Richard Burns the world rally championship.....and no amount of money spent at Halfords will change that.Aug 06, 2008

This is truely one of the greatest small cars ever made. In 1999, no car in its class could compete with the Impreza'a 165hp. It's short wheelbase and light weight makes for go-kart like handling that is fun to drive in any weather condition. Some may consider the exterior a bit gaudy or overdone but its aggressive rally fog-lights and large rear wing make it look like the rally car it is bred from. Not only that, the 2.5L 4-cylinder engine means great gas mileage which in this age of $4 a gallon gas is very important. The Subaru Impreza is an amazing car!Aug 01, 2008

I bought this car totally on a whim one day when I decided that I wanted a WRX now! Has failed to dissappoint me yet. I have owned it for over 3 years now and it still excites me everytime I turn the key and push down on that responsive accellerator. Being bought second hand it did need an engine and gearbox rebuild probably as a result of mistreatment of this beautiful peice of work by it's previous owner. Has not missed a beat since. It's the type of car you have if you simply love to drive.Jul 19, 2008

It's actually a 2000 uk turbo model but that wasn't an option. I have owned this car for just over 2 years now, it was standard when i bought it with only 215 bhp, but with a few modifications its now 262 bhp (proven on rolling road). I havn't had any major problems with it just usual wear and tear items, thats where being a mechanic comes in handy. It's 4 wheel drive so handling is great although it does understeer slightly when pushed a bit far. I may sell it in the near future and get a Mitsubishi Evo 8 fq 320. Apr 07, 2008
