The first car I owned...
Performance not so bad...
Acceleration could be faster...
Braking sometimes...
Handling of cause...
Build Quality, do I need to say anything other that it was A Volkswagen...?
Appearance old school... Some would call it "Rat look"Jan 20, 2010

Classic boxy 1970's design Giugiaro, combined with Karmann's Cabriolet's building expertise.
For anyone after budget fun in the sun, or wind in the hair motoring, there's no better bargain base solid car on the market (at least for price and driving fun! Great handling car with the right shock.wheel and tyre combination)

golf hasnt always been my favourite favourite, but the
torque that golf (or volkswagen) produce, is second to
none. steady on the road and very easy on the pocket
when it comes to maintenance. fun to drive and good car
for someone starting out. just keep the engine below 1600
or you'll fetch the bill for damages after dicesNov 25, 2008

My workhorse for the first few year of driving. Bought with 133,000 miles and was passed on to my parents at nearly 200,000. Took all the abuse i gave it and lasted after I moved on for another couple of yers (finally scrapped 2008). Carried me 70,000 miles in 3 years and had no major failures.
Performance - 1.4l and 58bhp of AWESOME POWER. Did well for being a bloated small car, was hardly fast
Build Quality - Survived well and was normally well held together. Eventually gave in to rust in 2008 at 15 years old. Rattled like any old car does at that age and milage.
Apperance - Styled well when it was made and didnt look dated. Mk3 Golfs still dont look dated. Big inside with reasonable storage, but no cup holders!
Cost of Ownership - Cost over the odds to buy when i got it, but was fairly cheap for consumables like tyres, discs and pads. MPg ranged from 30-45 depending on the journey, used a bit more oil in its final days.
Fun Factor - I had fun with it, I think i probably pushed it further than it should have gone and hauled much more stuff than it even anticipiated up and down the country.
If you can find one in good condition, its a spacious car that'll last well and wont break easily.

i bought my golf gti in may it had just over 125K on the clock, but the car was in excellent condition especially for the age, it has good accelaeration (apart from my clutch is slippin a bit) ive had 127 out of her so far but ran out of road lol, brakin is fine changed them as soon as i got her, build quality is excellent withit being a VW and all, i have some 17" vw gti alloys on her at the min trying my best not 2 curb them, failed other day : ( nu lights back and front, debadged front grill, tinted back window, cream leather interior, cream and black dash, K n N filter, Sebring Exhaust system. Its costin me (im 18 n im a lass) 1600 4 year on TP,F&T, tax is 185 4 year, mot fairly cheap, but being a 2L she drinks fuel - but at the end of the day she great fun 2 drive!Sep 19, 2008

1993 5Dr VW Golf GTi in black. My first VW Golf and boy did it look the dogs dangly bits. Unfortunately, I was doing an awful lot of commuting at the time and put a lot of miles on this car in a short space of time. I enjoyed almost every mile covered in this car and having owner many more expensive and faster ones since, but this one handled like a go kart and I still have fond memories of it now.Sep 07, 2008

It doesn't get the gas mileage that I thought it would...it revs almost like there should be another gear. It handles really well.
I really like the looks of my car and it's nice inside...trimmed out nice. When I clean it out it really looks sharp.
It is a solid sounding car that really surprised me when I took it get inspected because the things that were wrong with it in other cars I have owned you were hearing squeaks and thumps and bangs and blah, blah, blah...this car...no noise.Aug 21, 2008

Well as this is a VW, it's made from a solid block of granite. Built like a tank, this car is so strong, that when I had a bump in it, the only reason you could tell I'd had a crash was a smashed headlight.
However, that doens't excuse the sloppy suspension, pitiful engine (I had the TDi) that had no power and barly enough tourqe to get the car moving. The steering was soft, the ride was soft, the cabin was sparse and at times, you felt like you were actually in a boat. Looked horrible next to anyting other than a pile of entrails. I got rid of my old Fiesta for this? Well I was young and naive!Jul 13, 2008

This was my third car. It was a VR6 but don't be fooled by it's name, all the speed it should have had was destroyed by the lump of an engine. But then again I was driving around for ages with a knackered clutch! It was great to drive and very reliable. I eventually had to get rid due to the rising fuel prices. VR6's are very thirsty!Mar 05, 2008

1.6L was quicker than any of my previous cars, but was by far the worst to drive and constantly needed attention. I bought it as an ex company car at that company's book value so it was a real bargain. Never again, tho'.Jan 10, 2008

Great car overall future classic, brilliant handling can be a little nose heavy beacause of the weight from the 2.8, loads of power from mid range and topend but can be caught unaware from slow starts. Really well made apart from a few electrical gremlins which afect all mk3 golfs ie electric windows. Only downside of owning this car is its lust for petrol.Jan 06, 2008
