1990 Ford Probe Reviews, Pricing & Specs

When it ran, it ran like a bat outta hell. Trouble is, it didn't run all that often. I bought it from a Mexican guy who had no idea what he had. The Probe became my ticket to the Import scene. In its final configuration, it was painted flat black, 5% tint on the windows and sittin pretty on a set of black 18 inch Enkei PKR's. People used to ask what the hell it was because I completely shaved all of the emblems and decals from the body. The few who knew it was a Ford (Anal) Probe, would laugh and make jokes, until they got their doors blown off by a it. Unfortunately, I got bored with it and turned the boost up from the 18 psi I had been running to somewhere between 22 and 27 pounds. Im not entirely sure how high the boost got, because my boost controller failed and put the cylinder head into orbit. Rather than fix it, it became the first car I sent to the crusher.May 30, 2010

The Transmission gave a lot of power and quick takeoff, at the expense of a top speed of MAYBE 110 with a tailwind. Thank you ingenious Ford engineering, the aerodynamics of this car could have made it much more then it was. The Clutch gave out twice, breaks were weak, the flip top light elivators didn't like the snowy climate and cost too much to fix. (often i'd only be able to drive with 1 light up.) Had automatic shoulder belts, that was a plus. I had a custom 10 disk CD changer installed, with a subwoofer system, so the car at least was great for roadtrips. Handled excellently in the snow. Well my particular probe was in the LX trim. Very snappy vulcan 3.0 V6 with a 5 speed manual transmission. When I bought the car for $500 I wasn't expecting much, but the car blew me away. It was very very fast, shifted smooth, handled better than almost any car I've owned. All things you wouldn't expect from a compact ford. This car turned into my toy, with a cold air intake and a full cat back exhaust she bacame a road warrior of sorts. This car went through constant burnouts, with ease. usually I'd roll down a hill backwards, rev her up to about 3,500 to 4,000 rpm, and pop the clutch while simultaneously pulling the e-brake. I used this as a race car at the 24 hours of Lemons race, which is an endurance event for cars costing 500 dollars or less, and it performed admirably. It was fast in a straight line, and not handle very well, but all components worked save for one busted and easily fixed hose during the first day of the race. By far the biggest problem was the lack of skill of one of our drivers, who managed to crash twice, and punched holes in the radiator as well as got us penalties. Luckily JB weld works well on radiators. This was a great car, and stayed in the race till the last half hour, when a hit from a BMW took out our tire and their control arm.Aug 07, 2008

This little screamer fell into my lap when my cousin blew the head, so I got a free car. All I knew at the time was that it was a manual w/ a turbo. so I was excited during the long rebuild process. So the first time I took this baby out I was blown away. She pulls like a V8 if you ask me. I mean, 145hp is nothing to brag about, but then you put in 190tq and it makes all the difference. The Probe's turbo kicks in at a low rpm because of it's small size. So by 3k rpm you'll be fully boosted and pulling hard at 9.5 psi. I must say for an 89' model this car has the features. a good stereo from the factory with subs, in dash trip computer, adjustable nitrogen shocks w/ 3 settings (soft/normal/sport), speed and brake sensing steering, as the suspension reacts to your every move. But sadly this car has a unique look that is not of my taste personally, but she's got some good lines, so for a free car I'm not complaining. She does on on gas as long as you don't drive like me. on the freeway you pull and east 25mpg, and 15-20mpg around town. Now lets see...how fun is this car........Well I never want to go home at night, I just want to drive the back roads all night and burn every ricer i can find. She even pulls double duty, as I've had her up on some forest service roads (gravel) and she was a wannabe rally car blast to drive. Overall this is an awesome car and I think I deserves a lot more respect than it gets from it's DSM competition.Jul 28, 2008

This car was a decent first car for me. I wanted something sporty, cheap, and something that had a little cargo room. The probe worked well for transporting things as the back seat folded down allowing for a lot more storage. I really liked the car, but after about a year, the problems started popping up everywhere. I bought the car for only a few thousand, and it was requiring me to replace the rear axle and more, and so i had to get rid of it. If you can find one with low mileage, it is a great car to drive- smooth ride, quick, and fun. It is a Ford, so once it gets close to 100,000 miles, dump it!Jul 24, 2008
