I love its reliablility and 65 id plenty fast enough for me!, It always starts,, never overheats, oil gets black as the ACE of spades with in 3 days,, but, can't beat its reliability!, this one replaces my old 86 that I never changed the fuel filter on. ( hard lesson learned)Sep 16, 2014

This car has been the best car I have owned. My first used car and I have never had a problem. Starts up all year long and delivers a fun quality drive granted there are no mountains in your way. Learned how to drive a stick on my blue bonnet with 240,000 miles. Looking forward to many years of road trips and camping out with my daughter. Oh yea did I say 42+ mpg. we send our sons and daughters to die for the right to drive overpriced union guzzling recycling weight in five years. My golf saves lives every time I get 550+ on a small tank.
UPDATE: Been over a year and now getting 45-48.5 mpg and reached 650 miles on one tank. Adding the diesel additive seems to increase millage by one to two miles a gallon. Zero $ for repairs. Mar 29, 2013

i like everything but some little issues here and there... but its the wolfsburg package so it has all of the nice amenities. but some of the issues are bothersome and really annoying and i want them fixed now. it has the 1.8 non turbo engine, mits pretty damn fast, and has great breaks. the wolfsburg package includes nicer seats, interior styling, and exterior trim and rims. this car gets great gas milage.. mine only has 117,000 miles on it.. so im very lucky.. i need to replace the tranny because reverse went out, and i have the new tranny, and some berring problems in the front wheels.. this car is a good car, but parts are scarce.. help me out..Aug 24, 2010

Performance is great. The build quality of Volkswagens are good, but my head gasket or valve seals just went bad. Love the car though. Gas mileage is amazing, probably about 21-26 mpg. Very fun to drive, very snappy transmission.Aug 03, 2010

I got in to 2 car accidents in this car and i walked away with minor injuries. I loved this car, but it was small and sorta a pain when there was something wrong but it was my first car. I loved it for that reason.Nov 30, 2009

I really got this car for the fuel economy. This car was getting over 50 mpg even with over 250,000 miles on it. I also like the car because of how long the engines last, after all it is a diesel.Jul 25, 2009

dopest vintage cheap car out there, looks the part, masses of parts readily and cheaply available. I'm talking about thin bumpers though, halfordication is a bit of a problem with these cars. As a lot of lutsers and prutsers have a tendency to buy them too. Jul 17, 2009

Mk 1 Golf GTi Cabrio... fully mechanical and raw feeling without any electronic support.
Dynamic engine always want high rev.
Stiff body even it's a cabrio. This is a CLASSIC. If you talk about handling, it's still better than most of modern car.Jul 11, 2009

Acceleration is solid for a diesel powered car. Build quality is low because it has some crashes and it has been repaired badly. This car is fun to drive because you can do anything with it, and if you break something its not a big deal, because parts are cheap...Jan 03, 2009

Love my car it's my baby but needs a lot of work done to it.
I can't really tell you how it drives cos it's declared off road, it's my project for 2009.
The brakes and paint work is first and foremost but it will look the mutt's nuts when it's done.
Needs a CD player and bits to add afterwards but overall it looks cool.

I love getting 45 mpg on average! Though this car has
little to no get up and go, it gets me where I need to
go. It has been a great first car. Its also not the best
looking car, but again the gas mileage makes it all
worth it. Sep 14, 2008

Awesome Classic. Great for youngster's 1st car. Easy to handle, good views all around, cheap parts. Lots of aftermarket-parts to tune and style your own looks. Old, so rust is nearly always found. Carburetor-problems appear in older models, as the newer ones are supplied with injection. I'm sad having to sell this one.Aug 12, 2008

I absolutely loved this car. It was my second car and my college car. Unfortunately, she was injured in an accident and put out to pasture. She had a sunroof, 5 speed--just loved it.Jul 15, 2008

Looks like crap. Runs great. Perfect for the bad neighborhood booty call.
5 speed, +1 wheels with performance rubber, stock 1.8 Liter SOHC, stock K-jetronic (VW CIS) mechanical fuel injection. Leather reconditioned front recaro buckets from the special edition late 80's glis and gtis.
Dead easy to service and repair. Just about any US mechanic is familiar with this particular import.

This car has taken me around Germany, and I love it for that.
It may only have a 4 cylinder, 86hp engine, but it will go 110 mph - all day, everyday. And it even get decent gas millage.
Its bigger than today's Golf!Feb 27, 2008

We are most pleased with our 21 year old Golf. Few repairs and still uses no oil and is very peppy.

Although I loved this little German car, I must say that the '86 has an overheating problem. This isn't limited to just me, had a friend with an '86 Jetta and the same thing. I rebuilt the head, had the radiator flow checked and replaced the thermostat. Oh well. Aside from that coming up at the end of the car's life, it was awesome. Everything was at hand where you needed it in the drivers seat, the front room was accomodating for me at 6'1 with very long legs, and there was plenty of room in the hatch for carrying whatever you needed. The back seat was tight, but I did manage to get six people including myself home in it one night.
Repairs on this car were dead simple. Leave it to the Germans to make everything accessible as it can be on a tiny car. There was no extranious stuff going on.
I loved this car and woudl get another in a second. Feb 12, 2007
