I love its reliablility and 65 id plenty fast enough for me!, It always starts,, never overheats, oil gets black as the ACE of spades with in 3 days,, but, can't beat its reliability!, this one replaces my old 86 that I never changed the fuel filter on. ( hard lesson learned)Sep 16, 2014

Performance is great. The build quality of Volkswagens are good, but my head gasket or valve seals just went bad. Love the car though. Gas mileage is amazing, probably about 21-26 mpg. Very fun to drive, very snappy transmission.Aug 03, 2010

I really got this car for the fuel economy. This car was getting over 50 mpg even with over 250,000 miles on it. I also like the car because of how long the engines last, after all it is a diesel.Jul 25, 2009

dopest vintage cheap car out there, looks the part, masses of parts readily and cheaply available. I'm talking about thin bumpers though, halfordication is a bit of a problem with these cars. As a lot of lutsers and prutsers have a tendency to buy them too. Jul 17, 2009

I love getting 45 mpg on average! Though this car has
little to no get up and go, it gets me where I need to
go. It has been a great first car. Its also not the best
looking car, but again the gas mileage makes it all
worth it. Sep 14, 2008

Awesome Classic. Great for youngster's 1st car. Easy to handle, good views all around, cheap parts. Lots of aftermarket-parts to tune and style your own looks. Old, so rust is nearly always found. Carburetor-problems appear in older models, as the newer ones are supplied with injection. I'm sad having to sell this one.Aug 12, 2008

I absolutely loved this car. It was my second car and my college car. Unfortunately, she was injured in an accident and put out to pasture. She had a sunroof, 5 speed--just loved it.Jul 15, 2008

This car has taken me around Germany, and I love it for that.
It may only have a 4 cylinder, 86hp engine, but it will go 110 mph - all day, everyday. And it even get decent gas millage.
Its bigger than today's Golf!Feb 27, 2008

This was my first car purchased for $200. The motor was rebuilt, The body was smoothed and painted, it was a fun fast agile go-kart essentially. Sat 3.5" off the ground.Jan 10, 2008

We are most pleased with our 21 year old Golf. Few repairs and still uses no oil and is very peppy.

Although I loved this little German car, I must say that the '86 has an overheating problem. This isn't limited to just me, had a friend with an '86 Jetta and the same thing. I rebuilt the head, had the radiator flow checked and replaced the thermostat. Oh well. Aside from that coming up at the end of the car's life, it was awesome. Everything was at hand where you needed it in the drivers seat, the front room was accomodating for me at 6'1 with very long legs, and there was plenty of room in the hatch for carrying whatever you needed. The back seat was tight, but I did manage to get six people including myself home in it one night.
Repairs on this car were dead simple. Leave it to the Germans to make everything accessible as it can be on a tiny car. There was no extranious stuff going on.
I loved this car and woudl get another in a second. Feb 12, 2007
