Overall I like my truck and would recommend the model to anyone looking for a project. It takes me camping, fishing, back and forth to work. The 2.4L engine is a strong engine with proper care, it will last a long while.May 06, 2015

This is the kind of pick truck that appeals to those of us who like to do our own work. The platform is forgiving and reasonable for access and modifications. The overall summations is a project vechicle for fun and practicality. The main component is the 1973 Okanagan Camper.Mar 30, 2015

With only 230k on the odometer and a recently rebuilt engine (close to 60-80k on the rebuild), this truck is awesome! Driving rationally it gets around 17 or 18 miles per gallon in the city (US mpg) but then jumps to around 28-30 on the highway; this truck makes great for an eco-commuter (as in want to save gas) but then you can walk around the back and put this thing to work! Mine is the SHORT bed model, and the truck bed is still 6 feet, some-odd inches long (I am 6' and can lay down in it with about 2-3 inches both above my head and below my feet) - even some mid-1980s "FULL SIZE" trucks don't have a bed that big for a "short bed"!
Use the truck for economical purposes or work, or you could even try to take it to the track! My engine (Z24i - 2.4L 4 cylinder, twin spark plug, throttle body injected) is only rated at around 130-140ft-lbs of torque and 100-110 hp and yet it will stay in the running with most factory V8s (up until the mid-2000s, not the modern ones that make 300-500 horses right out of factory). I've tested on multiple occasions and have consistently performed a 0-60mph run in around 8 or 9 seconds (when I don't mess up those shifts!), which for a four cylinder is actually pretty good. Peppy little thing likes to be put at wide-open throttle.
My only complaints are that it tends to wander TOO MUCH and the parking brake. I'm not sure if it is because I need an alignment (which I know I do) or not, but when I hold the steering wheel to go straight, it will occasionally suddenly change "pitch" and start to wander, so I am constantly correcting the steering wheel to stay straight. The parking brake just won't work in my truck. I have checked my rear drum brakes (damn close to new), have had them adjusted, and then had the cables adjusted and then I went and did the adjustments myself (to be honest, I do not trust close to 90% of mechanics in my area) and even with the parking brake linkage/cables adjusted to as tight as they can get, the parking still wouldn't engage until the last 2 or 3 clicks of the entire handles throw and won't hold for crap when parking on a hill --- so basically, I have to depend entirely on my engine, gears, and tires (on the curb) to not roll when parking on hills. Somebody has told me this caused by air in the proportioning valve and that a simple bleeding will do the trick, so I will try that eventually.
Another complaint is the rear window (sliding) tends to somehow open up, so it will sit there and rattle until I open further or close it. The passenger side window sounds like there is a screw mashed against it when you try to roll it down/up and makes an ear-piercing screech. The driver's side window will physically shake in place when rolled down which makes for a small scare when dealing with wind-resistance at highway speeds (70mph). The front windshield is filled with cracks and chips ..... so basically, all of the windows in mine need looking at and/or replacing, which is going to be spendy.
Overall, still one bad-a** truck and hope it will last me another 200,000 miles.Apr 28, 2014

I bought this truck at a used car dealership in Raytown, MO. Had a little dent in the driver's door. It was a good introduction to how well-made Nissans are. Wish they were still called Datsuns. That was a cool name.Feb 03, 2013

It is versitile. There is a lot in a small package. Handles well and is fun to drive. It is the kind of vehicle that one looks forward to going somewhere in. It is the old "boxy" style that is still "cute". Oct 19, 2012

It's a great little truck if you take care of it. It's tough and fast if you want it to be. Has all the power needed to haul bout anything. it's fair for gas millage and it up keep isn't much. All in all i love this truck and I wouldn't get rid of it.May 26, 2011

gets great gas mileage and has no problems pulling small to medium trailers, engine
is bullet proof, great acceleration for being a 2.4L and a 5 speed manual, locking
differential is great when traction is low, body needs alot of work on the bed and
fenders but the cab is in great shapeMar 15, 2011

2nd truck I ever owned. Got it from my dad brought it from rag to riches back to rags. Rolled it down my folks driveway. Good story really. This is what got me into wheeling, though as you can see still in HS worried more about asthstenics than function. Most of the parts I got were from junk yards ironicaly and got a great deal on rimns from les shwabsince a guy swapped out for better onesSep 24, 2010

This truck is 25 years old and yet still economical, mechanically simple, and a lot of fun to drive. They don't make anything like this anymore. The parts are getting harder to find do to it's age but the repairs are still cheaper than with any Ford Chevy or Dodge. Even the newer Nissan cars and trucks can't live up to the 720. Most people look at a 720 and think it's just another old raged out truck but those that own them see a Classic peace of history. Nissan made the 720 from 1980-1986 and most of those trucks are still running today with an average of 200,000+ miles. My last 720 was an 86' with 615,000 miles and no the engine was never replaced or rebuilt. Aug 18, 2010

this particular truck was a 1984 but apparently car IQ doen't recognize it. the quality of this truck was pretty good as far as i could tell. it ran like a charm once i got all the vaccum lines on correctly. it was a blast after putting some all terrain tires and taking the 4x2 out on the trails, suprisingly it amde it through stuff that my fullsize chevy wont. in a nutshell this truck was a lot of fun after getting all the bugs worked out.Oct 27, 2009

This truck has never let me down. Let others down, but thats what happens when morons work on these trucks. Its got a lot of low end power, good torque. Its gets like 15 mpg in the city so its a trade really. It hauls everything I need to haul without breaking a sweat or sacraficing freeway speed. I think these 720's are the sexiest truck nissan has ever let out. The best thing about them is there is so much you can do to them in the performance senseJul 01, 2009
