27 years old, and this car drives 25 miles a gallon. Unbelieveabable performance for a 4 banger. Almost $3k in recent services after pulling from storage.....long term. This car is a great investment.. Original paint and interior with 145k miles original..............Oct 25, 2012

The 944 was said to be the Ford Pinto of the Porsche family. It really isnt as long as you know how to appreciate it.
It is a prime example of technology from 1985 - this car handles really well, is a little on the heavy side - but doesn't feel that way when you drive it. And its super comfortable to drive.
It has 50/50 weight distribution which is really hard to find in your run of the mill affordable sports car. It has a 2.4L I4 in the front and its rear wheel drive parts are all in the boot.
Top speed of 135 before it ran out of power, and fuel economy at regular speeds is around a 25MPG average.
Things to look out for when buying are the wiring harness: they tend to dry rot over the years - give em a squeeze and listen for the sound of cracking rubber.
Make sure the cooling system doesn't have any problems these tend to rust out and start to leak - you don't want an engine that has been all gunk'd up with "stop leak" chemicals... this is a short term leak fix future expensive problem if your going to be the buyer.
Also look for low miles, and check the drive train for poorly done repairs.

I purchased this car in July of 2002 with 68K on it. The car was
originally from New York, and I was the second owner. This is basically
the same car Jake Ryan drove the hit 1984 movie Sixteen Candles and
was my pride and joy senior year of high school and through part of
college. Sadly, I sold it in July 2005, and it is back home in New York.
Pros - One of the best handling cars ever produced, build quality, can't
miss 80's styling, a bargain Porsche
Cons - Maintenance costs, Needed more power (non turbo), can't miss
80's styling, some feel it was not a proper Porsche being front engined
and water cooledNov 08, 2010

They built this car fairly well and it looks sporty and fast. It is fast, don't get me
wrong, but it is costly to upkeep and replace parts on the car itself. This car is fun
to drive and will turn heads regardless, but unless you have a prepared
pocketbook, pass this beauty by.Jul 10, 2010

performance is good handleing is good the quality is great it gets great gas mileage. It has needed repairs but doesnt any car that is 25 years old. I would rate the interior of my car as fair the leather is poor condition but the dash is in good condition. It is a fun car to drive I do get some looks from people considering I am a young owner and it is a porsche the cost of ownership is pretty expinsive but I wouldn't say its outragous. Jun 22, 2010

Performance:
Acceleration-Not the fastest thing on the streerts but not something u want to pull up to at a red light.
Braking-iv never measured
Handling-AMAZING! thats what this car was designed for. with the trans and dif at the back and motor up front it gose around corners like an F1 car
Build Quality- If maintained Properly very reliable
Appearance- personal prefrance....I love the look
Cost to own- you insure a Porchse not a Ford... lol no offence to all u for owners
Fun Factor- most fun u can have with your close on. lolMay 11, 2010

Overall this car is a joy to drive. It has excellent handling and
responsiveness and gets excellent gas mileage for a sports car (between
26 and 28 on the highway). My only performance complaint is that I wish
it had more power, but it makes up for what it lacks in the handling
department. It is a great looking car from all angles rain or shine. One
major downside is the cost of ownership with repairs, but it is 25 years
old, and some maintenance is expected.Apr 05, 2010

It is considered one of the greatest drift cars because of the transmission being between the rear wheels. The car is worth about $5000 dollars in excellent condition. It is a little expensive for parts, but that comes with the name.Apr 02, 2010

The car is fast. Parts are expensive. But there is not much that needs to be done. Overall ride for a sports car is phenomenal. I get about 28 to 30 miles per gallon. She sticks to the road like a true sports touring car!Mar 01, 2010

I love everything about this car - from the sound of the engine to the pop up lights. It handles excellent along the lanes. Love the fact that it's a real engine so I can pop the bonnet and actually work on it. Cheapest car i've ever had for running costs. This car is real fun to drive - reminds you what driving is really about!Dec 16, 2009

Accelerates amazingly for an 85' near perfect weight
distribution means great handling, low to the ground very
aerodynamic, not the most attractive car but not one to be
messed with, great on gas and wicked fun to drive stick, yepSep 14, 2009

I believe the 944 has timeless styling and impeccable handling. I would have another anytime, but might want a 944S or Turbo for more power. Style great interior and fun for the money. It was a great front engine Porsche even if it did start life as a 924 built for VWAug 27, 2009

Well it is just a Volkswagen with a Porsche badge on it...but the engine, and looks of the car cant be matched by any cars in its time. 2.5liter GT motor plant gives a great push on those big rear wheel and makes for lots of fun. Aug 26, 2009

With minor mods its a rocket, handels amazing and turns heads! The main performance upgrade is the mass air flow upgrade, its the best $1,000 you could spend. Second get a 951 head to add about 35hp, and a performance chip, then the car is a rocket. Its the most powerful 4 cylinder I have ever driven. The average fuel economy is around 30mpg. Upgrades and maintaining the car is very costly..... Its a Porsche! Timeing belt has to be checked every 15,000 miles and changed every 45,000 miles. BUY ONE YOU WILL LOVE IT!!!! Feb 10, 2009

Härlig motor, fin väghållning, genomgående mycket hög byggkvalité.
Mycket sportbil för pengarna, skall man hålla kostnaderna nere får man dock vara beredd på att skruva en del själv.May 14, 2008
