The Toyota Tacoma's current nationwide average price is $45,339 CAD, and its lowest point over the past year was $44,302 CAD. Recently, prices have come down for the 2023, 2024, and 2025 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.
Is the Toyota Tacoma a good car?
Yes — the Toyota Tacoma is a strong used-truck choice if you value durability, resale strength, and off-road capability. The all-generations owner rating is 4.53/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise its reliability, rugged design, and long-term value, and many also like its versatility for both daily driving and work use. Across the model years, the Tacoma also earns repeat praise for off-road ability and solid performance, with comfort and practicality showing up often in owner feedback as well.
Expert reviews rate the 2024 and 2022 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs are a noisy cabin, a functional-feeling interior, and some versions that feel less polished than rivals, especially when you compare technology and ride comfort. Even so, the Tacoma’s strong reputation and broad appeal keep it near the top of many used-truck shopping lists.
29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Toyota Tacoma models reliable?
Owners and experts consistently point to the Tacoma’s durability, strong resale value, and rugged build quality. Across the model years, the truck is repeatedly praised for dependable performance, off-road confidence, and long-term usefulness.
- Owners rate the Toyota Tacoma between 4.2 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, the long-term ownership picture is generally reassuring, especially if you choose a well-maintained example with a clear service history.
What should I look for when buying a used Toyota Tacoma?
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0), including Lane Tracing Assist, lane-departure alert with steering assist, oncoming vehicle collision avoidance assist, road-sign assist, emergency stop system, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: 8-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: 11.9 L/100 km combined with the manual transmission and as low as 11.2 L/100 km combined with the automatic.
Which Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2024 Toyota Tacoma offers these trims:
- Tacoma: The standard 2.4-litre turbocharged i-FORCE engine, 4WD, an eight-speed automatic, and the new coil spring multi-link rear suspension make this the core Tacoma setup for buyers who want the model’s modern redesign and everyday capability.
- TRD Sport: Sport-tuned shocks add a more road-focused character while keeping the Tacoma’s truck utility intact.
- TRD Off Road: Monotube Bilstein shocks and 17-inch off-road alloys give this trim a stronger off-road hardware set.
- Premium packages: Heated and ventilated SofTex-trimmed seats, the 14-inch centre display, and the larger-screen tech upgrade make these the best-value choice if you want the most comfort and equipment.
- i-Force Max hybrid: The hybrid powertrain is reserved for maximum capability and is the most advanced Tacoma setup in the lineup.
What Toyota Tacoma do most buyers choose?
The Toyota Tacoma years with the most listings are 2024, 2023, and 2025.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 455 | 35.8% |
| 2023 | 422 | 33.4% |
| 2025 | 341 | 34% |
| 2022 | 328 | 29.9% |
| 2021 | 224 | 25% |
| 2020 | 173 | 25.4% |
These higher-volume years tend to be the most popular because they give you the broadest mix of availability, pricing, and equipment. They also sit close to the Tacoma’s newer redesigns, which makes them especially appealing to shoppers who want modern features without moving all the way to the newest model year.
What is the Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2015 | $23,034 CAD | −19.47% |
| 2025 | $57,772 CAD | −16.61% |
| 2014 | $20,844 CAD | −11.58% |
| 2016 | $28,481 CAD | −8.6% |
| 2024 | $53,748 CAD | −6.69% |
| 2020 | $40,041 CAD | −6.17% |
| 2021 | $42,833 CAD | −6.11% |
| 2023 | $47,974 CAD | −5.03% |
| 2022 | $43,794 CAD | −4.5% |
| 2017 | $33,496 CAD | −4.36% |
| 2019 | $38,443 CAD | −4.14% |
| 2018 | $35,215 CAD | −3.7% |
Most Tacoma model years are down year over year, which is good news if you are shopping used and want to benefit from softer pricing. The largest drops are concentrated in the newer and older ends of the range, while several mid-range years have moved down more modestly. That pattern still reflects the Tacoma’s strong resale reputation, but it also creates more room for used buyers to find value.
The 2018, 2019, and 2017 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the Toyota Tacoma safe?
- 2024: 8/10

For the safest used buy, the 2022 model posts the highest confirmed score of 9/10.
Should I buy a used Toyota Tacoma now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −16.61% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −6.69%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 34% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 35.8%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $53,748 CAD. The Toyota Tacoma offers a rugged, work-ready character that has long made it a favourite for buyers who want durability and off-road ability in a midsize truck.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine produces 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque, and the automatic is estimated as low as 11.2 L/100 km combined.
- Tech: 8 inches is the standard screen size, Premium packages get a 14-inch centre display, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.
- Safety: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 adds Lane Tracing Assist, lane-departure alert with steering assist, oncoming vehicle collision avoidance assist, road-sign assist, and an emergency stop system.
- Starting price: The 2024 Toyota Tacoma comes at a base MSRP of $46,950.
If you're buying used today, the 2024 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

I bought the Limited to get the retracting running boards for easier access. It has everything you can think of and then some. It has a dash cam to record your drive. Not something I will ever use. It has remote start from an app on your phone. After year one its $15 a month. Ridiculous! It rides nice with a solid feel and has plenty of power when you need it. Yes the back seat is a bit small but doable for average height passengers. The dash screen is too big in my opinion, almost obstruct your view to the right side of the truck. The seats are comfortable and the seat position is good. The fit and finish is good!

The Toyota Tacoma Extra Cab not to be confused with Double Cab. Is new though I bought it used but at 17K it's close to new. While I haven't had it long enough for a full review. I have had Toyota PU's before and the last one I had went 225,000 miles and I still sold it for $2200 9/10 years later after I moved from MN to FL. This one has great pickup off of the 2.4 Liter Turbo and though it takes a climb to get into I'm looking into side railing steps via online suppliers. Overall I am happy with the purchase though I did bite in on the extended warranty since my trade in a downpayment brought the montly costs down low enough to make it affordable. I see F-150's and F-250's and Dodge Ram Trucks of similar make and size but for my money Toyota Truck are legendary for their ability to take wear and tear.

Toyota Tacoma test drive
overall
The Tacoma is still truckin' right along. Toyota marks the start of the model's fourth generation with a ground-up redesign.
The fourth-gen Tacoma is also the first Tacoma to share a platform with the larger Toyota Tundra. (The TNGA-F platform also underpins the Sequoia and the just-revived Land Cruiser.) It launches in Canada in two configurations and six packages, each powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The Tacoma's first-ever hybrid powertrain is due in the spring of 2024. We traveled to Malibu, California, to drive the all-new Tacoma in all of its gas-only guises.
