Is the Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the Toyota 4Runner is a strong choice if you want a rugged SUV with lasting appeal.
The all-generations owner rating is 4.64/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise the Toyota 4Runner for its reliability, off-road capability, comfort, spacious interior, and robust performance. Across the model years, the 4Runner also earns repeat praise for its durability and strong resale value, which helps explain why it remains such a popular used SUV.
Expert reviews rate the 2025 and 2023 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs that show up in recent expert reviews are poor fuel economy, limited rear-seat space, and a ride-and-handling balance that stays true to the 4Runner’s rugged character rather than chasing a softer feel.
29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Toyota 4Runner models reliable?
Owners consistently describe the Toyota 4Runner as durable, dependable, and well suited to long-term ownership. Expert commentary also reinforces its reputation for strong reliability and lasting value.
- Owners rate the Toyota 4Runner between 4.17 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is generally tied more to age, mileage, and maintenance history than to the model’s core reputation.
What should I look for when buying a used Toyota 4Runner?
Key things to evaluate:
- Fuel efficiency: The 2025 Toyota 4Runner is estimated to return 12.4 litres per 100 kilometres in the city, 9.6 on the highway, and 11.2 in combined driving, while the Hybrid is estimated at 10.3 L/100 km city, 9.5 on the highway, and 9.9 combined.
- Infotainment: An 8-inch infotainment touchscreen is standard, while a large 14-inch touchscreen is available; Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both wireless.
Which Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2025 Toyota 4Runner offers these trims:
- SR5: The base trim starts the lineup and is the best-value starting point if you want the new-generation 4Runner at the lowest entry price.
- Limited: Adds full-time 4WD availability and suits buyers who want a more upscale setup.
- Platinum: Adds full-time 4WD availability and sits above Limited for shoppers looking for a more premium feel.
- TRD Off-Road Premium: Adds stronger off-road capability and is a smart pick if you want trail-focused hardware with a more equipped cabin.
- TRD Pro: Adds the most impressive adventure-focused capability in the lineup and is one of the most capable choices.
- Trailhunter: Adds the most specialised off-road hardware in the lineup and is the top adventure-oriented choice.
What Toyota 4Runner do most buyers choose?
The Toyota 4Runner years with the most listings are 2022, 2020, and 2024.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 149 | 32.2% |
| 2020 | 141 | 41.1% |
| 2024 | 137 | 24.1% |
| 2021 | 130 | 36.9% |
| 2023 | 128 | 28.1% |
| 2018 | 123 | 31.7% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more inventory to compare, which can make it easier to find the right trim, mileage, and price combination. They also often line up with strong owner interest and broad appeal across the 4Runner lineup.
What is the Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |

| 2024 | $57,543 CAD | −9.83% |
| 2023 | $54,841 CAD | −8.56% |
| 2020 | $43,398 CAD | −8.33% |
| 2016 | $29,618 CAD | −7.68% |
| 2021 | $47,187 CAD | −7.42% |
| 2014 | $26,789 CAD | −6.94% |
| 2019 | $41,030 CAD | −6.57% |

| 2015 | $28,229 CAD | −2.95% |
| 2025 | $71,770 CAD | −0.81% |
Most model years in the table are down year over year, which is good news if you are shopping used because prices have generally softened. The largest drops are concentrated in the newer and mid-cycle years, while the smallest change appears in the newest model year, which is close to flat.
The 2025 model year is holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.
The 2025, 2015, and 2018 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The 2025 Toyota 4Runner is available with a 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 317 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, while the Hybrid i-Force Max delivers 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque.
- Tech: An 8-inch infotainment touchscreen is standard, a large 14-inch touchscreen is available, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both wireless.

In love with this car, I think the car is fantastic value. Of course, with this being a new drivetrain time will tell if reliability lives up to the previous gens. Outside of that consideration the car is an absolute blast and I love the new 4 cylinder turbo. It feels very dialed in and the power is great, the car just wants to take off and it feels genuinely quick. I just switched from a 2018 F-150 and the suspension was a massive upgrade, the car feels planted and rugged but still soft enough on the bumps you’re comfortable driving. Very impressed with the safety features and tech with this being a base model. The car will let me know via the app when I’ve left something in the backseat or left a window open of door unlocked! As well the screen despite being the “small” screen is still a great size and has the same features as the larger one. The seats are cloth and I love the fabric, design, and feel of them. My car has the grey seats and the look genuinely solid. The interior has a lot of plastic as is to be expected but the design is sleek and looks very premium. Despite the interior having a decent amount of plastic components it feels very well constructed and all of the functions and pieces, whether shifting the car into a different drive mode, open and closing the door, temperature controls, etc. have a very nice feel to it. The speakers are phenomenal, the bass is genuinely crazy and the sound quality is crisp, you would find it hard to believe this is the cheaper sound system! From what my salesman was telling me even the 8 speaker bass system are JBL speakers and while I haven’t verified by reading up on it, the performance of it seems to match for sure! The capability, cargo space, and even leg room in the back are great as well for a car its size and class. As well it feels nimble to drive, has a great turning radius and just looks fantastic. I took the air dam off of mine (that big plastic lip hanging off the front bumper) it took 5 minutes and could be accomplished with a Phillips head or common 10mm socket. If that hanging off the front makes you apprehensive of the new look it’s very easy to remove and the difference is night and day! Fair warning it caused a slight hit to mpg, usually less than 1 mpg from what I’ve heard but I haven’t confirmed myself but it frees up a whole 5 1/2 inches of ground clearance in the front so if you plan to take it off road definitely worth removing. Overall I’m in love with this car and highly recommend it if you’re in the market for a capable off road suv. If reliability holds up as well as previous models as much as I love Ford I would have a very hard time switching back from Toyota!!

overall
The new-for 2025 Toyota 4Runner proves that good things come to those who wait.
After a very long 15 years, we’ve finally got a new Toyota 4Runner with more capabilities, power, comfort, and technology. It's also more efficient thanks to a new hybrid option and more composed on pavement, but it remains a solid all-terrain vehicle to extend your adventures further.
Verdict: Toyota doesn't throw out the formula with its newly redesigned 4Runner. Instead, the 2025 model keeps many of the features shoppers have loved for over a decade, while also adding a more contemporary selection of four-cylinder powertrains.
