What should I look for when buying a used Mazda CX-5?

Key things to evaluate:

• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates the CX-5 at 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres in the city, 7.9 on the highway, and 9.0 combined — among the highest figures in a segment where more power and better fuel economy are becoming the norm.
• Infotainment: The infotainment system is one of the CX-5's most significant upgrades for 2026. The old setup, controlled by a rotary knob on the centre console — or via the narrow touchscreen itself in some, but not all circumstances — has been replaced by a 12.9-inch touchscreen on all trims.
• Safety package: Every trim includes adaptive cruise control with speed limit assist, automatic emergency braking with turn-across traffic detection and head-on collision mitigation, rear automatic emergency braking with rear cross-traffic alert and pedestrian detection, lane keep assist, blind spot monitors, vehicle exit warning, driver attention alert, traffic sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors, and dynamic guidelines for the mandatory rear-view camera.

Which Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?

The 2026 Mazda CX-5 offers these trims:

• GX: The entry trim brings standard AWD, Google built-in, a 12.9-inch touchscreen, and a comprehensive safety suite, making it the value-focused choice for shoppers who want the core CX-5 experience.
• GS: This is the best-value trim, adding 19-inch wheels, a power liftgate, a head-up display, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a 10-way power driver's seat with memory.
• GT: The top trim adds a Bose 12-speaker audio system and SiriusXM satellite radio, with the Premium Package bringing a larger 15.6-inch screen, a 360-degree View Monitor, a Driver Monitoring system, rear USB-C ports, and front cross-traffic alert with automatic braking.

What Mazda CX-5 do most buyers choose?

The Mazda CX-5 years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.

These higher-volume model years tend to attract the most shoppers because they balance newer features, broader availability, and a wide range of prices. That gives you more choice when comparing trims, mileage, and condition.

What is the Mazda CX-5's resale value?

Most model years are down year over year, which can work in your favour if you are shopping used. The larger drops are concentrated in older and mid-cycle years, while the newest examples are easing more gradually. That pattern gives you more room to find value across the lineup.

The 2025, 2017, and 2015 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Is the Mazda CX-5 safe?

• 2026: 9/10
• 2025: 6/10
• 2024: 8/10
• 2023: 10/10
• 2022: 10/10

For the safest used buy, the 2020, 2022 and 2023 models all post the highest confirmed score of 10/10.

Should I buy a used Mazda CX-5 now or wait for the next model?

Buy now if:

• Price trend: The 2025 model is at −3.27% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −7.8%.
• Deal availability: The 2025 model has 19.2% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 21.8%.
• Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $32,337 CAD. The Mazda CX-5 offers a polished cabin and a more premium-feeling driving experience than many compact SUVs.

Consider waiting if:

• Powertrain/efficiency: The only available powertrain is the carryover SkyActiv-G 2.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder, producing 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque and paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.
• Tech: The standout feature is Google built-in, which comes standard across the entire lineup. You get native Google Maps for navigation, the Google Gemini AI voice assistant for natural-language commands, and access to the Google Play Store for downloading apps directly to the infotainment system.
• Safety: Every trim includes adaptive cruise control with speed limit assist, automatic emergency braking with turn-across traffic detection and head-on collision mitigation, rear automatic emergency braking with rear cross-traffic alert and pedestrian detection, lane keep assist, blind spot monitors, vehicle exit warning, driver attention alert, traffic sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors, and dynamic guidelines for the mandatory rear-view camera.
• Starting price: In Canada, the lineup spans three trims from $39,690 for the GX trim to $45,590 for the GT trim.

If you're buying used today, the 2024 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.
