The Hyundai Elantra's current nationwide average price is $17,877 CAD, and its lowest point over the past year was $17,611 CAD. Recently, prices have come down for the 2023, 2024, and 2025 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.
Is the Hyundai Elantra a good car?
Yes — the Hyundai Elantra is a strong used-car pick if you want a compact sedan with broad appeal, good value, and a wide spread of trims and powertrains. The all-generations owner rating is 4.43/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise the Elantra for fuel economy, comfortable interiors, and value for money. Across the model line, shoppers also tend to like the range of features and safety technologies, along with the car’s practical everyday character.
Expert reviews rate the 2021 and 2017 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs that show up in recent expert reviews are dull driving dynamics in some versions, weak base engines, polarising styling, and interior materials that can feel cheap. Even so, the Elantra’s mix of space, efficiency, and equipment keeps it compelling for used buyers.
30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Hyundai Elantra models reliable?
Owners and experts repeatedly point to the Elantra’s comfort, fuel economy, value, and everyday usability as its biggest strengths. The model also earns praise for its practical cabin, broad feature content, and generally easygoing ownership experience.
- Owners rate the Hyundai Elantra between 3.0 and 4.88 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is best managed by choosing a well-maintained example with a clean service history and checking the specific model year’s condition carefully.
What should I look for when buying a used Hyundai Elantra?
Key things to evaluate:
- Fuel efficiency: The 2024 Elantra Hybrid is rated at 4.8 litres per 100 kilometres in the city, 4.5 on the highway, and 4.7 combined, while non-hybrid trims are rated at 7.7 L/100 km city, 5.9 highway, and 6.9 combined for the base engine and 8.3/6.8/7.6 for the N Line Ultimate.
- Infotainment: A 10.25-inch touchscreen is standard on the Luxury trim and above, while the Essential and Preferred have an 8-inch touchscreen; wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported on the smaller system.
Which Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?
The 2024 Hyundai Elantra offers these trims:
- Essential: The entry trim gives you the 2.0-litre engine, CVT, an 8-inch touchscreen, and the core safety suite, making it the value-focused starting point.
- Preferred: This trim adds blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and safe exit assist, so it is the best-value choice for many shoppers.
- Luxury: This trim brings the 10.25-inch touchscreen, digital instrument panel, Bose audio, wireless charging, and Highway Driving Assist.
- N Line Ultimate: This trim adds the 1.6-litre turbo-four, seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, sportier suspension tuning, and the more aggressive exterior treatment.
- N: This performance model adds the 276 hp turbocharged powertrain, eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox, adaptive dampers, and track-focused hardware.
What Hyundai Elantra do most buyers choose?
The Hyundai Elantra years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 890 | 34.4% |
| 2025 | 721 | 35.2% |
| 2023 | 660 | 32% |
| 2022 | 611 | 31.9% |
| 2021 | 558 | 30.1% |
| 2026 | 507 | 35.7% |
These higher-volume model years tend to attract the most shoppers because they offer a strong mix of newer features, broader availability, and more choice across trims and prices. When supply is deeper, it is also easier to compare condition, equipment, and deal quality.
What is the Hyundai Elantra's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2017 | $10,236 CAD | −18.84% |
| 2014 | $6,689 CAD | −17.63% |
| 2019 | $12,770 CAD | −17.21% |
| 2018 | $11,900 CAD | −14.38% |
| 2020 | $14,987 CAD | −13.24% |
| 2023 | $20,896 CAD | −13.09% |
| 2024 | $22,892 CAD | −12.67% |
| 2025 | $24,940 CAD | −12.31% |
| 2022 | $19,073 CAD | −12.3% |
| 2021 | $17,950 CAD | −12.09% |
| 2016 | $8,598 CAD | −8.35% |
| 2015 | $8,175 CAD | −7.11% |
Most Elantra model years are down year over year, and many of the declines are double-digit drops. That pattern generally favours used buyers, since it creates more room to find value in recent and older model years alike. A few years have fallen less sharply than the rest, which can make them especially interesting if you want a balance of price and freshness.
The 2015, 2016, and 2021 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Should I buy a used Hyundai Elantra now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −12.31% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −12.67%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 35.2% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 34.4%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $22,892 CAD. The Hyundai Elantra offers a roomy cabin, strong value, and a broad mix of trims that make it easy to match the car to your needs.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The latest model pairs a 2.0-litre inline-four with 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, while the N Line’s 1.6-litre turbo-four makes 201 hp and 195 lb-ft and the N delivers 276 hp and 289 lb-ft.
- Tech: The latest model offers an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on some trims, plus a larger 10.25-inch screen on Luxury and N-Line models.
- Safety: The latest model adds two rear side airbags, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit assist, forward collision avoidance with pedestrian and cyclist detection, junction turning assist, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, and highway driving assist.
- Starting price: The vehicle starts in Canada at $24,559 for the Essential trim.
If you're buying used today, the 2024 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

The car was a great value for the money I spent. It had plenty of features, and ultimately great MPG and price. I loved that it still has manufactuer warranty and is a certified-pre owned. I did wish it supported Hyundai's digital key, but the BlueLink is another phenomenal feature, other than having to pay every year. For other cars in this class such as the Civic, Corolla, Forte, K4, Impreza etc. It is reasonably priced, only competitive with the K4. If I wanted all of these features in one of those other vehicles especiallt the Civic I would be paying significantly more.

The Hyundai Elantra is the sportiest-looking and most versatile compact car on sale.
For nearly 20 years over six generations, the Elantra established Hyundai as a provider of bottom-rung transportation. Not until the current seventh-generation model debuted in 2020 did the Elantra shed its cheap image and stand competitively with other compact sedans from Honda, Toyota, and Nissan. Hyundai always sold on low prices and long feature lists. Now the Elantra is a genuinely sporty, well-constructed car that competes on actual substance — namely, how it drives and feels — and offers a wider range of trim levels. For 2024, a mild refresh brings more style and standard equipment.
Verdict: Get past the strange bodywork and plasticky interior, and you’ll find a well-mannered sedan that is equally adept at being comfortable and economical as it is sporty and truly entertaining.
