Why it stands out
The 2016 Volkswagen Golf R stands out as a compact performance hatch that pairs serious pace with everyday usability. It uses a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, sends power through Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system, and was rated at 296 horsepower with 280 lb-ft of torque. That combination gives it the kind of grip and control that suits fast road driving, while the Golf R’s unique suspension and steering setup help it feel more focused than a standard hatchback.
It is also unusually well equipped for the class. Standard features include a touchscreen infotainment system, heated and electrically adjustable front seats, leather upholstery, Bluetooth connectivity, keyless entry, dual-zone climate control, bi-xenon headlights, and a rear-view camera. Volkswagen also made the Golf R available only as a five-door model from this generation onward, which adds to its practical appeal. By the 2016 model year, the manual transmission became standard, while a six-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic remained available.
There are a few drawbacks to keep in mind. Fuel economy is listed at between 9.2 and 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres combined, so it is not especially frugal. The model also has a fairly solid reliability reputation rather than an outstanding one, with coolant leaks and water pump failures noted as possible issues. Even so, the 2016 Volkswagen Golf R remains appealing because it delivers strong performance, high equipment levels, and a subtle, upscale look in a package that is still usable every day.
