Why it stands out
The 2021 Tesla Model Y stands out as a compact luxury crossover that blends SUV practicality with Tesla’s familiar minimalist approach. It is based on the Tesla Model 3 and shares 70% to 75% of its parts, but its taller body, coupe-like shape, and rear hatch give it more versatility and cargo space than a sedan-style layout. That packaging helps explain why it became such a popular choice for buyers who want an electric vehicle that feels roomy without giving up a sleek profile.
For 2021, the Model Y came with standard all-wheel drive, two electric motors, and the Long Range and Performance versions. Standard equipment was generous, including 12-way power-adjustable seats, a 15-inch infotainment touchscreen that doubles as a gauge cluster, heated front and rear seats, reclining rear seats, a glass roof, four USB ports, video streaming capability, a top speed of 240 km/h, and Autopilot. It also offered useful EV-friendly storage with under-floor cargo space and a front trunk, while available extras included larger wheels, a tow hitch with a 1,587-kilogram tow rating, Full Self-Driving (Supervised) capability, and Smart Summon. Owners also tend to praise its electric performance, advanced technology, and fun driving dynamics.
There are trade-offs, though. The Model Y lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rides firmly, and puts almost all controls through the touchscreen. Buyers also need to be comfortable with Tesla’s habit of changing features mid-year, since production updates do not always follow a strict model-year pattern. Even so, the 2021 Model Y remains appealing for shoppers who value strong range, generous standard features, and a distinctive electric crossover layout.
