What should I look for when buying a used Hyundai Kona?

Key things to evaluate:

• Fuel efficiency: The base engine’s Natural Resources Canada fuel economy ratings range from 7.5 to 8.6 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving, depending on the trim and whether you’ve checked the AWD option box, while turbos clock in at 9.0 L/100 km combined with standard AWD.

Which Hyundai Kona trim should I buy?

The 2026 Hyundai Kona offers these trims:

• Essential: The entry trim gives you the Kona’s core package and is the starting point if you want the model’s roomy cabin, widescreen digital instrumentation, and standard 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen.
• Preferred: This trim adds adaptive cruise control and a system that can brake to avoid collisions when making a left turn across traffic or when an oncoming vehicle is headed straight for the Kona, making it the best-value choice for many shoppers.
• N Line: The sportier trim brings the turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine with 190 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque, an eight-speed automatic, standard AWD, and available upgrades such as a surround-view camera system, Remote Smart Parking Assist, and Highway Driving Assist.

What Hyundai Kona do most buyers choose?

The Hyundai Kona years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.

Higher-volume years tend to draw more shoppers because they usually offer a wider selection of trims, colours, and price points. That makes it easier to compare examples and find one that fits your budget and equipment needs.

What is the Hyundai Kona's resale value?

The Kona’s used prices are down across every model year shown, and several years have posted double-digit declines. That creates a favourable setup for used buyers, especially if you want a newer model year at a lower price than it carried a year ago. The pattern is consistent rather than mixed, with no year showing a gain.

The 2024, 2023, and 2021 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Is the Hyundai Kona safe?

• 2026: 9/10
• 2025: 9/10
• 2024: 9/10
• 2022: 8/10
• 2021: 8/10

The Kona’s standard driver assistance suite includes forward collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, lane centring assist, high beam assist, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

For the safest used buy, the 2024, 2025 and 2026 models all post the highest confirmed score of 9/10.

Should I buy a used Hyundai Kona now or wait for the next model?

Buy now if:

Consider waiting if:

• Powertrain/efficiency: The turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine supplies 190 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque, while the base 2.0-litre four makes 147 hp and 132 lb-ft.
• Tech: Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and BlueLink connected services functionality come standard.
• Safety: The latest model adds a camera-based Blind-View Monitor, a surround-view camera system, reverse automatic braking, parking sensors in front, in back, and to the sides, and Highway Driving Assist.
• Starting price: Hyundai sells the 2026 Kona in Canada with prices ranging from $28,949 to $38,899, including the $2,200 destination charge.

If you're buying used today, the 2024 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.
